Yea I read somewhere saying 2009 forecast for the Airline industry is pretty damn grim. People are cutting back on flyings and Airlines aren't going fly planes below break even. So good luck man.

agreed, but they are still currently looking for more apprenticeship. from what i've heard, they are preparing to boot almost all the mechanics in the shop onto the road because they don't want any buses to break down during the olympics, so they can just repair them on the road. they will somehow need to fill back the bodies in the shop. what kind of schooling program did you take? i know for sure that if you have taken the 6 or 9 months commercial vehicle/pre-apprenticeship course at BCIT, they will definitely take a good look at your application. this is only valid for the location im working at, not sure about the others. you should definitely keep trying to apply.

Employer: Any of the numerous conversation schools DT
Position: Conversational English Teacher
Pay: $10/hr (base; that's not what I make)
Description: Sit and talk with Japanese and Korean FOB students as they whine about their inability to make Canadian friends and pay you to talk to them in English.
Prereq's: Be able to speak and write english PROPERLY.

Alby 04-11-2009 01:19 AM

what kind of qualifications do you need for that Graeme? and what hours do you work? FT/PT?

iPee 04-11-2009 01:35 AM

yeah shit so fucked

Just graded from SFU got a property management position but pay sucks ass, since they are chinese and real estate isn't the greatest right now. Going back to school in May to finish up my accounting.

Having a hard time to decide on what to do, I can stay at the property management and make mediocre pay, or go back to the restaurant and make a killing. Hard to say whats better in the long term in this state of the economy.

Alby 04-11-2009 01:46 AM

in this situation, probably the restaurant job. people got to eat.

Like it says in the post, can you speak and write english properly?

I work FT hours, but it's a bit hard to get those hours 'cause of the spotty demand and sketchtacularness of most schools.

CorneringArtist 04-11-2009 08:40 AM

So in short, you get paid to listen? Sounds like a decent gig. Anyone here work warehousing?

Graeme S 04-11-2009 08:42 AM

Paid to talk and correct.

Warehousing can be good depending on the job; if you really want to make good money with something similar to warehousing, see if you can get some longshoreman work.

Yeah and with 2010 coming up its definitely going to be busy, but if do go back to the food industry, I'm giving up the chance to learn something related to my studies.

Never thought life was going to get this confusing.

Alby 04-11-2009 09:52 AM

well, the restaurants will always be there for a while. see if you can find something related to your studies. at best, you can always go back to the food industry as a last resort.

Weekday, generally 9-6 with 60-90 minute class durations throughout the day.

A) get the "japs" word out of your vocabulary
B) no guarantee on the hotties. You're much more likely to get a 40-year-old housewife here with their 10 year old kid to get a year of Canadian schooling so as (s)he can get a leg up.

Carl Johnson 04-11-2009 11:45 PM

oops lol sorry about that

Thats the course I've taken, I think their only problem with me is the fact that I don't have any shop experience. The funny part was, that there were turds from my class who already were working at transit, the guys who clean the buses, one of them i swear didn't even know the difference between an extension and a deep socket and from what i know, they are all currently working as mechanics.

Alby 04-12-2009 01:32 PM

wow thats just messed up then. but then again, apprenticeship is to get experience in the shop as you've already taken the course. i don't see why they didn't accept you. from the mechanics i've talked to, they just told me to take the course and then apply. next time i see one, i will ask them if shop experience is also required.

lilevilboi 04-12-2009 11:23 PM

Is that starbuck you were work hiring people at the moment?

Alby 04-13-2009 12:00 AM

we just hired 1 person recently so i assume we still are. however we require a minimum of weekends plus one weekday. thats what i've heard when school was in semester. the more available you are, the greater the chances of you getting hired. the person we just hired, i believe he had weekends plus 4 weekdays available. doesn't mean that you will get scheduled for all those days.

svelt 04-13-2009 11:00 AM

I know a guy who delivers newspapers/fliers by driving around Metro Van around 2-4AM and cracks around $40/hr. Factor in gas and I'd wager he's still making $30/hr for it. Only does it around two evenings a week.

Being a tutor, either Uni or High School level is an obvious one. If you're fairly busy you could just take in one student once/week. I made $18/hr teaching high school math around five years ago. I would reckon you would actually need to be in University to qualify for this but if you join many of the various tutoring agencies you could get students even if you were in first year.
