You're thinking of Jewish people.

Hindu people cannot/should not eat beef because it comes from cows. Cows are a sacred animal because in their religion, it is believed that when ancestors are reincarnated, they are in the form of cows. That and I think there is a holy connection between cows and God (according to their religion).
