B.C. government officials scrambled Friday to notify all ministries of a new policy against selling off surplus body armour after two bullet-proof vests were put up for bid on the B.C. Auction website this week.

Solicitor-General John van Dongen admitted he was a little embarrassed to learn of the posted vest ads, given his government’s high-profile anti-gang campaign, which includes a new law limiting the sale of body armour.

“The government received an e-mail from a member of the public questioning the posting, so we had supervisors in the ministry who reviewed the posting and realized it was inappropriate and it was pulled,” he said.

The B.C. Auction site listed the “shirt front body armour” on Wednesday with small photos of the royal blue vests, which came from the corrections branch. The bidding began within hours, with one vest pulling in an offer of $78 and the other $26.69.

Bidding was halted after the citizen’s tip was received, but the original ads could still be seen online on Friday.

NDP critic Mike Farnworth said gangsters could easily have grabbed the sale items, given that the bid process is virtually anonymous.

“It is absolutely unbelievable. I mean, what the hell are they doing? They clearly just don’t get it,” Farnworth said.

“And more importantly, how long has this been going on? How long have the Bacon brothers been able to access B.C. government auction sites to be able to get cheap body armour?”

Van Dongen said he was told on Friday that body armour has not previously been sold on the B.C. Auction site.

But he admitted it has been sold before through “solicited bids,” meaning businesses can make a request to buy surplus government items.

“Apparently in the past there has been body armour sold through this process,” he said, adding that the purchasers were primarily security firms and hunting-equipment outlets.

He said there are no statistics available on how many bullet-proof vests the government has sold over the years.

“We do not have statistics on the number of pieces of body armour sold through this process, as body armour can be included in miscellaneous safety items,” he said.

Van Dongen was asked if the government could have screened buyers of the body armour to keep it out of the hands of gangsters.

“The fact is, we can’t. We are talking about an historical process that predated any government policy on the issue,” van Dongen said.

“We indicated in our gangs-and-guns strategy that we would be pursuing legislation to ensure that body armour is only used by people who would be appropriately licensed to use it, that it wouldn’t just be available to gangsters and members of the public.”

He said ministry officials have called all the branches of government with body armour to let them know not to sell it as surplus.

“Not only has my deputy talked to the corrections people, they have also talked to the sheriffs’ branch, conservation officers and all parts of government that might possibly have these Kevlar vests in their operation,” van Dongen said.

Farnworth said it is disturbing that the body armour was listed this week, given all the publicity about gang members wearing it when they arrived at hospitals with bullet wounds.

“It is a disgrace. The police are supposed to be wearing body armour, not the gangsters, and you certainly shouldn’t be able to buy it from the government,” he said.

If I were a gangster, I would spend the cash to have an entire bulletproof suit of armor + helmet developed, and then I would walk around like the terminator capping everything and everyone. Even hamsters.

that vest looks like a POS. if and when I buy one it'll be a brand new one. I wouldn't trust my life to a used vest. just storing it wrong can weaken them. (they need to be stored flat on a shelf, not hung on a hanger)

a couple guys did that to rob a bank in the states.
100 shot barrel magazines for their AK-47s too.
one endded up dying due to a misfire and shot himself in the head and the other finally got gunned down by police.
but until special forces could arrive the regular cops were shooting them and nothing happened.

Youtube North Hollywood Robbery.

It was insane. The cops had to go to the local gun store and upgrade their pistols

Ya, that was totally insane. The robbers had large duffel bags full of guns and ammo and were decked in body armor and helmets. They even made a movie about it called 44 minutes.

I remember that incident.

These guys had Army - type body armor. I remember it being on tv and the cops and the live crews there, sayin "we're shooting them with shotguns and 9mm, they're coming back with automatic machine guns, we're getting out gun 3 guys vs 35 police officers".

SWAT guns weren't even a match for them, haha i remember the only way 1 of the robber died was cuz his 44 Magnum mis-fired on himself point blank for it to penetrate his armor.
