compatible canon digital rebel lenses

Got a question for anyone here;

does anyone know if the old canon slr lenses will work with a Rebel XS?
I have a Rebel XS but the lense that it came with 18-55 sucks, I glanced over at craigslist and saw some film SLR canon lenses for about 30-50 bucks, also are there any other lenses or adapters I can get?

what makes you think a lens that cost 50 dollar won't suck?

also only EF and EF-S lenses will work with your canon.

i think i heard that some of the non-digital SLR lenses will work, but you won't have autofocus. might work for some things you do, but for a regular walk around lens, it'd be a bitch.

Pick up a 50mm F1.8. Its cheap and effective. Everyone and their mother has one, or has had one at some point. Why does the 18-55IS suck that bad?

well as for why I say the 18-55 sucks, for me I need something with a bit more of a zoom, I was trying to take some pictures of my son at his music concert and I couldn't zoom in that well. My Panasonic FZ20 seems better.
BTW what is the equivalent to a 12X Optical?

I thought I read somewhere that said something like some SLR Canon lenses are quite decent priced and are compatible...plus I am not a professional or anything so why spend a couple hundred when possibly I can spend a couple bucks for a similar lense minus a few features..

Look into something like the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS. It'll give you decent reach and its $369.00 brand new.

Someone should have told you that a max of 55mm is far from any zoom. I'm sure when people get their first DSLR they want to take pictures of landscapes and stuff like that, so hence the wide angle lens it comes with. So for what its supposed to do its pretty decent for a first lens.

Depends how "old". Anything that's branded for Canon EOS will work - that would be EF or EF-S mount. Older manual-focus FD-mount lenses won't work.

Any EOS-series lenses will work with full autofocus and autoexposure.

Obviously older FD-mount manual-focus lenses won't autofocus... IF you get an adapter to attach them to an EOS camera, you'll find you don't have autoexposure either, since the camera has no way to control the lens's aperture.

28mm-280mm would be 10X zoom... 28-300mm is commonly available, that's about a 10.7X zoom range. Problem is, you're probably not going to find one of those that's faster than f/4-f/5.6, which won't be very good for low-light shots in places like school concerts. Plus, the longer the zoom range, the greater to compromise in quality.

Thats not quite true. Your camera will still work in Av, you just set the aperature on the lens, instead of on the camera. It will still set the exposure properly.

Yes, but it won't know what the aperture is, so it won't be able to set a properly corresponding shutter speed.

It doesn't know what the aperature is, but it knows how much light its getting through the lens, and adjust the shutter accordingly. So it may not be directly related to it, but its essentially the same thing.
