Angry puppy
 

Hi, I have a black Jindo puppy that is 7.5 month old now. In the recent month, Everytime we went on a walk in the park or trails whenever he sees another dog he wants to jump on them and he growls like mad (a loud angry growl). It scares me and the other dog owners because it sounded like my young 7month puppy wants to attack.

He will growl at 9 dogs out of 10 except for the very tiny breeds. He continues to growl until the other dog is about 20meter behind us, then he will be quiet.

My puppy listens well to my commands such as sit, stay, no, on your bed, come here...etc, But my commands are completely useless when interacting with other dogs. Puppy behaves very well alone when we are just walking by ourselves. He would fetch and come back run around having fun. With other dog in the picture, puppy forgets about me and become all wild and crazy.

My puppy regularly plays with another bigger dog (2yrs old boxer of a friend's), they play , chase, and bite, but without hurting each other (he doesn't growl at her, but he always trys to hump her without success).

What should I do, I dont want to worry that one day he will attack and kill someone else's dog.

i did, but he just chokes dogs, I Don't know if its a fix or a supression to more anger problems down the road.

^ He doesn't choke them...it's a leash, well a rope that sits high on the dog's neck, which gives the owner more control than a regular collar.

You're suppose to snap your dog out of it BEFORE he even has a chance to lunge/attack..there's always warning signs first, when those appear, you yank on the leash or even give him a quick kick so he shifts his concentration from the other dog back to you.

Socializing a dog with one dog is not socializing. So yes now your dog is only comfortable with the dog it knows, or doesn't perceive as a threat. I have seen this countless times.
Take the dog out on leash somewhere you know there will be lots of dogs, then just let him watch, when he reacts correct him so that he losses the focus. When he shows a positive reaction like tail wag, reward him. If you can as he becomes more comfortable arrange with people with calm dogs to let them meet/sniff , make it quick then walk away. keep a loose leash let them smell then call your dog back to you and walk away. Your puppy is out of the socializing time so you will always have to be aware of it around other dogs.

try doggy daycare...it's good for the dogs and you don't need to exercise them. cost is about $20 for a day

maybe you just got a dominant dog, the whole growling thing is to show who's the top dog at the park.

my old dog would do that. i was a little concerned when u see a 120lb dog try to pounce on a 70/80lb dog. but the other dog owner said it was fine. dogs do that to show who is boss. its a huge hierarchy to them.

this dog now... is a wuss. he circles back all the time to make sure we are there, and he ALWAYS manages to bring the other dogs back to intro us to his new friends... its kinda funny to watch.

ah yes, that's right...make sure he's neutered. Yep, in the dog world they gotta assert their dominance with each other and growling/pouncing is part of it. Dogs need to be socialized with as many dogs as possible which is why i try to bring mine to doggy day care every so often if I don't have time to exercise him or to take him to the park to meet other dogs.. You might even want to try dog parks where they can meet each other and play.

My dogs growls a lot and sounds like it's killing things but is all play as the mouth stays open the entire time. Our puppy trainer said in her 20yrs of training, she hasn't seen a dog that is making all that noise without killing things.

what you can also do is if he's just about to growl is to do a firm yank on the leash(don't use a retractable for training) and a firm "no" to correct the behavior and make sure he's not leading you, you should be leading him.

worse comes to worse what you could do is grab the scruff of his neck and just drag him down and pin him down like what other dogs would do to show the dominance. I have to do that with my little schnoodle as he tests me all the time on who's the pack leader

Looks like it's typical behavior for the breed.

Neutering will almost always calm a male down but you still need to train and socialize him.

Next time you have him out for a walk, try this: The split second that you even sense he notices another dog, get him to pay attention to you. Either give his leash a quick tug or tap his hind quarter with your foot - maybe even a a firm "Hey!". Then continue on.

When you're on a walk you want him to pay attention to you and your commands, not other dogs (at first at least). You want to snap him out of what might become a fixation (and possibly protective aggression).

And when I say tap him with your foot, I'm talking enough to get his attention but I'm not saying boot the thing. I currently have a Rotty and a Yorkie and this method has worked great for walks.

Oh by the way, is it normal for dog to have 4 balls? It looks like he has 2 right below the shaft of his penis (looks like a space rocket), and there are also 2 right under his anus hanging in a sac (very visible from the back)

hahaha, vet check him out today, no 4 balls. Scared me for a second there. It turn out the 2 that looks like balls are not balls. They are for sexy time and locking into a bitch's vagina.

You completely missed the entire psychological and behavioural approach to his technique...

Neuteur your dog and watch the shows again.

Just so you experience the program for what it truly is, here's his logic model:

- Alpha Dog controls the pack (Human = Alpha Dog)
- Follow nature's alpha dog pattern (if a dog steps out of line, he gets disciplined through: a bite, a submission, or a bark (what Caesar does is a simulated act of nature's response)

It's pretty damn simple and it works.

1. NEVER pull away from the dogs, Pull UP on the chain. Pulling him away increases the dog's aggressiveness and fight mentality.
2. Misdirect his attention by jabbing him on the side of his belly (jab = a tap strong enough to direct his attention briefly away from the 'target')
3. It's your job to tell the dog what to do, he's just following YOUR orders, if you don't give any, he's going to assume that leader position and do whatever he wants to fill that VOID.

So if the dog is sniffing some tree, and i should not be pulling him away from it? instead pull up?,, what is "up"? Is it like walk towards the dog and push him?

No, instead of pulling the dog away, pull the leash upwards (toward the sky). It should bring the dog's attention back to you.

another example, of being the pack leader(alpha dog)....

say you are walking towards another dog on the sidewalk...keep a good leash control that he's at your side or behind you, don't let him lead(you gotta be in front of him or beside him)...don't let him sniff or meet the other dog.

If he pulls or whines, give a firm/stern "let's go" or "leave it" and while a quick firm tug on the leash in the direction you want to go and power walk past the other dog and continue going.

While walking past the other dog, If your dog turns to look at the other dog, another firm tug and "let's go" and continue to move to where you want to go and continue going there to show him you are the alpha

Also....never let your dog decide on where to go or where to sniff. Even if your dog needs to pee or poo, take him to the spot that you designate for him. Because your dog is a bigger dog, you will likely need to give it a hard tug...don't worry, the dog needs to know who's boss.

My 20lb schnoodle pup tries to pull at times when he see's other dogs and I sometimes have to sorta tug/drag him along with the firm "let's go" and then he follows along afterwards. I don't let him meet every dog he chooses so that he doesn't get used to it having it his way..he gets socializing when I want him to.

- You're training your pup, don't let him walk ahead of you. He's following you (the leader)
- No distractions, you're walking a route, don't stop because he did.
- Don't feel bad that he doesn't get to sniff everything-you can let him sniff when he's fully trained
- Don't have a long lead (slack) keep him right beside you while walking, BUT Do NOT put tension on the leash. The leash needs to be relaxed (with slack)

to reiterate: Pulling up, is pulling the leash vertically instead of horizontally.

Thanks, oh and how often should I decide to let the slack off so puppy can pee?, because the reason to walk a dog is usually making sure that they don't pee in the house or poop in the house. If I walk puppy right beside me, he probably cant empty his bladder or anus very often.

How frequent should puppy be allow to run with longer leash?

when you go out, take the dog to the spot you designate as a pee spot...he'll pee completely...

then take him for a walk.... after playing or long walk, before coming in again...take him to the grass or spot to pee again and you are good for the house.

a dog should be able to hold 1 hour for how many months old he currently is for the 1st year...if he's 8months, he should be able to hold for 8hours if necessary....of course this is in conjunction with krate/kennel training. If you give it lots of water chances are you'll need to take it out a lil more often.

i have a shiba wich there both about the same type.. she use to do the same thing. when it happened i submited her by laying her down on her side till she calmed down. also best thing to do if ure coming up to a dog dont be tence on the leash.. let it go abit.. with a tence leash they fell more afraid .. trust me do this and ure dog will change !good luck

Ok dude do you know anything about your dogs breed?

Jindo are considered to be one of the most agressive dogs and are extremely territorial. Hence why they are used as guard dogs. Any dog they see they will bark and growl a lot. I raised 6 Jindos and my uncles family is one of the top breeders of Jindo in Korea. These are agressive dogs and are known to hunt animals down in packs. Yes it is true. You have to socialize your dog if you don't that dog will bite anyone it dosn't know and try to growl and attack other dogs. Mine did this. Strangely enough its the femals who are a bit more aggresive toward other dogs. Males tend to stand thier ground and make themselves look bigger by puffin their chest out a bit (strange yes I know). Also if you bought your Jindo in the Vancouver area please have it checked for genetic disorders which include skin disorders and leg problems. The Jindos in the Vancouver area have been inbreed like crazy. So a high percentage of them do have an underlying problem. Jindos also need know whose boss or they will mock you .. they will. Also they don't seem to bother with small dogs unless the small dog is yappy .. then becareful becuase Ive seen Jindos attack their own young when they were yappy or seen as weak.

Btw shiba is way different from a Jindo.. personality wise. Jindos are considered quite aggressive while Shibas are more timid. Japanese bred the Shiba from Jindos back when they occupied Korea
