Gas attendants in Vancouver now asking to preselect grade when prepaying for gas?

So for the last 2 weeks I've been asked to select the grade of gas that I'll be pouring when I prepay. I don't recall doing this last month so what's the reason behind it and is it only some gas stations asking this?

Eatman 05-10-2009 09:32 PM

Seems like Petrocan is doing that, probably for about a month now... But what I've also noticed is that gas stations are now charging a dollar for air, pretty retarded imo.

Lomac 05-10-2009 09:40 PM

Haven't been asked for it yet. *shrug* Mind you, I always pay at the pump...

Its air. You're fucking charging me for air!

(Yes, I realize that its the air compressor, the maintenance, the electricity, etc but come on....)

I've made it a habit to avoid the gas stations that charge for air. Guess they figured since they could charge for sucking air, they could charge for blowing air too.

pandalove 05-10-2009 09:56 PM

what ? what air ? i dun get it ? they jus asking what grade u want ..

Some people want the amount of liters on their receipt when they pre pay.

danned 05-10-2009 10:06 PM

invader 05-10-2009 11:12 PM

hk20000 05-11-2009 12:00 AM

Chevron always has free blow job......for your tires.

k20a 05-11-2009 12:01 AM

I use to pay with debit card at the pump, and sometimes pay inside with cash. But ever since I got my credit cards, I've been always outside. Why waste my strength walking inside, when I can use it to pump gas? LOL

CanadaGoose 05-11-2009 12:45 AM

I always overfill my tank at PetroCanada....bad too, like it goes full blast right to the brim and pours out everywhere.

And the clerk in there tried TWICE, to hide part of the snacks I bought thinking I would pay for it and not notice somethings missing and walk out. I stared him down, and I shit you not he said "Just keeding" both times.

Damn youuuu petro canada

/rant

Shun Izaki 05-11-2009 01:20 AM

They ask the grade because sometimes they might be genuinely out of it?

I would think so.

I've only ever filled chevron + pay at the pump, so nothing has ever changed for me... though i have got 94 oct for cheap on several occaisions after seeing that 92 was out, or 92 for cheap after seeing the price was messed on the pump.

It's not really being cheap... well maybe it is??

But I just prefer to be smarter.

eurochevy 05-11-2009 02:20 AM

Meowjin 05-11-2009 02:23 AM

Considering no stations are making money anymore they are triyng to make it somewhere.

ZenZa 05-11-2009 05:49 AM

jeez, even though it's only air, you are using their equipment...

thumper 05-11-2009 06:08 AM

wow i never noticed that they charged for air! it's common practice in the US but didn't think it would happen here... i haven't used one in a long time since i have one of those little canadian tire portable air compressors the run off the ciggy lighter.

It's the new systems some of them are running - the computer forces the GSA to select the grade to enable, not just which pump to enable. Dunno WHY they've changed it to that, but that's what's happening. I know Petro pushed the updates out to all their stores within the last couple months - their paypoint computers are all updated remotely.

As for the air, most stations with the new pay air stations also have a button inside that the GSAs can use to turn on the pump - most will do it for free if you just go inside and ask.

Gas out here is $0.10 more than elsewhere in the country. Explain the missing $0.075.

I went to petro on Hastings and Renfrew and theres a sign on the tire machine that says, for free air ask the clerk.

so i went inside and said it says i can get free air if i asked you she said no and made me pay

kinda silly if you ask me, had to go back again because i only had a toonie.

Lotta turnover at some of the Petros recently - they've done a huge shift in associate/ownership/management which has led to a lot of GSAs either changing stores or just plain quitting... especially at that store. Previous owner was a really laid-back guy; new owner is a good guy but really uptight, so I know a quite a few of the old GSAs that just decided to go on to other things...

Anyway, point is, there's a lotta new staff at some of them that might not know any better. If they're being that thick, ask someone else or talk to a manager.
