14.99 a month gets temporary access (1 month) to all songs from ZunePass, and it looks like you can keep up to 10/month, permanently.

I think I'll just keep downloading music for free, buy what I really like, and go to concerts of these artists.

How much of a success does it have to be to be successful? iTunes is pretty, damn successful by most people's count.

well doubling, perhaps tripling your user base?

if songs were under 20 cents for high quality music and you get a discount for buying an entire album i'd hop on board

but at $2-3 a song no way

^ I buy music off itunes all the time. $0.99 is pretty cheap to me for a song if it's a good one I'd actually listen to more than a couple times.

The argument "it costs $30K to fill an iPod" is fucking stupid, and how could a "financial planner" who should know math make such a ridiculous comment?

And what if next year the iPod doubles its storage? Or doubles it again the following year? Do they expect that the price of music should keep getting cut in half simply because technology has regularly pushed the limits of how much data you can store on a drive? If they develop a new storage technology tomorrow that allowed 10 terabyte iPods, should music companies start charging 2 cents per song just because it now costs $3,000,000 to fill your iPod?

^ quite easily. it's basic fucking math man. $1/song x 30,000 songs = $30,000

I laugh at all the people who buy these ipods with huge storage, yet don't put shit all on them. I'm talking <5G of music on a 160GB ipod. then next year they'll go buy the newest one.

kids these days I tell ya....

really how the fuck does anyone listen to over 15 gigs to begin with

i have a top 500 classic rock collection which has been refined over and over and it's only like 2.3 gigs, i have every hiphop song ive ever listened to and every album from every artist i like and that MIGHT crack 8 gigs..

you pretty much have to be into every genre to use a 60+ gig ipod or just fill it with videos

I have 60 gigs of music.... I used to have more but I lost a lot.

honestly though a lot of that is junk/stuff I barely listen to, downloading whole albums/discographies is so much easier but such a waste of space.

Just had a look through my collection. I have listened to a lot more than half of my collection (~40GB). I listen to new stuff (new to me) a cd at a time. I don't do singles, since I don't listen to the radio.

yea i guess if u have a large collection and just continue to add new stuff it will get to those sizes

the thing with that though is, unless your constantly making playlists your shuffle is full of garbage

thats my problem, I used to just have one general purpose playlist of all my favourite songs at that moment. but now I like so many genres that I'd need to maintain like 6 playlists, and the genre labelling on most of my music is wrong.

somehow I'll find a way to sort through those 16 days of music or whatever it is.

i'm still using a 3rd gen 20GB ipod from 2003. the battery is no longer good, but it works damn well in my car hooked up via pioneer ipod interface.

i probably have over 100GB in music on my computer, lots were purchased online but most were downloaded for free (RIAA must hate me). i've put in maybe only 11GB of music into my ipod. i agree with the above statement that ipods over 20GB is pretty useless unless you like watching videos off a tiny little screen.

as for playlist, i only put mp3's with good ID tags into my ipod. on top of that i spend a few seconds to touch up the ones that weren't filled in properly everytime i upload new music. seems to work for me in keeping it organized.

One day, if i'm really, really, really bored, I'll go through and make sure everything is tagged properly. I've recently gone through the collection and pulled out all the sub-192Kbps music. It was hurtin trying to play 128kbps on a decent sound system.

I think for most people, the hard drive based players have way too much capacity but most people don't buy those players anyways. Most people buy flash based players which have 1-8GB capacities.

The hard-drive based players are useful for audiophiles who listen to uncompressed music. A single uncompressed album could take up to 800 MB (or whatever) of space.

And I buy from the itunes music store all the time because I believe artists deserve to get paid for their work. The only times I download from other sites is if its not available on itunes.

songs are priced the way they are so that everyone gets paid a fair amount per song. don't forget that itunes pays the record labels and artists every time a song gets downloaded... so if the prices dropped drastically, so would the income of the supporting artists.

while its true that recording artists have never really made the bulk of their money on album/single/song sales, it sure helps. it costs a great deal of money and time to create the music we all enjoy, and i feel like i'm doing the right thing by paying a fucking DOLLAR for music i enjoy... PLUS, you get it super quick, in great quality and it comes with the album art.

i've converted a lot of friends from thieves on kazaa or whatever over to itunes.

^ unless they've changed it, itunes pays the record labels a bulk amount for all the albums put out by that label, and nothing directly to the artist. so in reality buying off itunes doesn't support the artist at all.

Even though you can download a shit load of music for free, everyone should at least buy albums that they really like.

I wonder if the people who made that commercial feel stupid before they actually released it. The whole concept of buying music is pretty much out the window now. Give or take a handful of people, I don't think subscriptions for downloading music is a popular option either.
There needs to be a site that sells DRM-free mp3's at like $0.50.
