| Filter options?
Well my Tamron 17-50mm is on the way from Ontario. I bought it for like 350US shipped to my door from eBay. Yes I know, I risked not checking it out first hand to check if its a sharp copy but for 420 CDN I'm not going to complain. Anyways I'm looking for a UV filter and CPL and narrowed it down to these choices.
UV:
Hoya Standard 67mm UV(5mm)- 23 Shipped
Hoya HMC Multi Coated(5mm)- 32 Shipped
CPL:
B+W 67mm Slim- 70$ Locally from a friend
Hoya 67mm Pro1 Digital DMC(3mm) - 45 Shipped
I dont know if I should cheap out for the UV since its a sacrificial piece of glass anyways. But I want to spend the money on a good CPL. Also I wanted to ask is 5mm too thick for the UV? If its going to be tagged onto my 3mm CPL am I going to get vignetting? Any suggestions? Thanks

I'd avoid Hoya filters, as they're generally hard to clean and keep clean.
You will almost certainly get vignetting if you stack the filters.

What filters would you recommend Senna that would be a reasonable price? And is there no combo I could use to prevent vignetting?

I'd go with the B+W F Pro series. Brass construction, not the weak aluminum construction of the Hoya or Kenko filters, more efficient coatings. B+W filters have very smooth coatings that are very easy to clean.
You shouldn't stack filters in any case. If you're going to use the CPL, take off the UV filter. Every filter you put in front of your lens increases your surface count by two - four in the case of a CPL. This will reduce some sharpness and increase the potential of ghosting and flaring.

I use cheapo filters from dealextreme, dont have a b+w to try but at a quarter cost of my lens it's not worth it for my amateur shots
Im sure there's a difference between a dealextreme 'massa' one and a b+w, but im not so sure about the difference between a massa one and a hoya or kenko one. I also own a pro1D one and to be honest it looks the same to me on my 23". No its not a s-ips panel lol.

It's not the sharpness of the image, it's more flare and ghosting resistance. The B+W and Heliopan filters are also made to a higher standard.

Go get them from http://maxsaver.net/ - reputable company with pretty good prices. Get the B+W if you can swing it, Hoya/Kenko HMC otherwise.

Ended up buying a B+W Slim CPL for 65$ and a Kenko Pro1D UV for 20$. And wow Senna, you were right. The CPL was a breeze to clean with these Kodak papers I had. The Kenko was a pain the ass and kept streaking/smudging. I just couldn't justify spending 50$ on a UV though.

I would have bought the B+W UV filter and a Kenko CPL because you almost never shoot into the sun with a CPL, when the potential for flare and ghosting is highest. A UV filter with the most efficient coatings is more important IMHO because a UV filter is almost always going to be on your lens, and there will be more times when you shoot into the sun or a bright, specular light source.

Very true, now I guess I should hunt for a used B+W UV as well since thats whats going to be on the lens 95% of the time.
