Shaw digital cable for 3 extra dollars?

I got a phone call from shaw indicating that if I paid them an extra 3 dollars a month, I could "rent" a digital receiver, and get a few high def channels just for a flat rate of 3 extra dollars! I asked if there was any contract. NO DICE! Seems too good to be true though.... :'(
Anyone else get the phone call?

some high definition channels are free already (CBC, CTV, Global etc), thats why you just pay for rental.

If TSN HD was free, thats a different story

http://www.shaw.ca/en-ca/ProductsSer...rogramming.htm (Look under HD basic)

As long as you have an HD terminal, you'll get everything in the Digital TV package + 12HD channels

so are you getting the digital service and a set top box rental for an extra $3 a month. id say yes its worth it. even if it is not the HD box, $3 a month is worth it for access to digital channels and the interactive guide.

the $2.95 only lets you rent a standard digital receiver. you won't be able to watch hd channels with it

you'll need to rent/purchase a hd digital receiver to be able to view hd channels

Yah I got the same call a few weeks back. Well my dad did, and he said OK. He sent it back to them a few days later once we realized you can't get any HD channels through it.

Gotta get an HD box if you want high def viewing.

Oh, HD channels are included. The digital cable box simply can't process those. You need a HD box for that.

why can't I plug the shaw cable line into a TV with a digital tuner and pick up the HD channels like that?. (instead of using an over the air antenna) it seems shaw blocks the air frequencies out of their line which which is lame.

apparently Delta cable doesn't block and it works great.

shaw encrypts those channels and they use those digital boxes to be able to control what channels you're suppose to be getting

just because you have a hd digital box does not necessarily mean you automatically get hd channels. they also have to enable those channels on your account to have access to hd basic

since shaw can't control your tv itself, i guess that's why they have those digital boxes available
