What 114,800bhp @ 102 rpm and 5,608,312lb/ft @ 102rpm looks like World's most powerful diesel engine, they're made for large container ships, this company makes them http://www.wartsila.com/ The Wartsila-Sulzer RTA96-C turbocharged two-stroke diesel engine is the most powerful and most efficient prime-mover in the world today. The Aioi Works of Japan's Diesel United, Ltd built the first engines and is where some of these pictures were taken. It is available in 6 through 14 cylinder versions, all are inline engines. These engines were designed primarily for very large container ships. Ship owners like a single engine/single propeller design and the new generation of larger container ships needed a bigger engine to propel them. The cylinder bore is just under 38" and the stroke is just over 98". Each cylinder displaces 111,143 cubic inches (1820 liters) and produces 7780 horsepower. Total displacement comes out to 1,556,002 cubic inches (25,480 liters) for the fourteen cylinder version. Some facts on the 14 cylinder version: Total engine weight: 2300 tons (crankshaft alone weighs 300) Length: 89 feet Height: 44 feet Maximum power: 108,920 hp at 102 rpm Maximum torque: 5,608,312 lb/ft at 102rpm (they managed to up the HP last year to 114,800bhp) Fuel consumption at maximum power is 0.278 lbs per hp per hour (Brake Specific Fuel Consumption). Fuel consumption at maximum economy is 0.260 lbs/hp/hour. At maximum economy the engine exceeds 50% thermal efficiency. That is, more than 50% of the energy in the fuel in converted to motion. For comparison, most automotive and small aircraft engines have BSFC figures in the 0.40-0.60 lbs/hp/hr range and 25-30% thermal efficiency range. Even at its most efficient power setting, the big 14 consumes 1,660 gallons of heavy fuel oil per hour. the cross section http://people.bath.ac.uk/ccsshb/12cyl/cross-section.jpg http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...r/c6676eb3.gif crankshaft http://people.bath.ac.uk/ccsshb/12cyl/rta96c_crank.jpg pistons http://farm1.static.flickr.com/149/3...4e3c9f75_o.jpg http://people.bath.ac.uk/ccsshb/12cyl/rta96c_piston.jpg 1 of the turbos http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/318...geturbojf4.jpg here is the 10 cylinder version, the top model is 14 cylinders (Cylinder liners are die-cast ductile cast iron <---- I have no idea what that means, but it sounds more badass than Wolverines adamantium) http://people.bath.ac.uk/ccsshb/12cy...6c_cyldeck.jpg I was thinking an engine swap for my car is overdue, wonder if this will fit. |
it should fit in a eg civic, yep. probably not gonna get much weight reduction tho i remember seeing these pics many years back on RS |
veyron killer. |
this is like several years old...it's been posted few times |
this is a revised the model of the engine with more power, I couldn't find the newest pics so I just posted some of the old ones... but i guess a repost is still a repost even if it's several years old |
now u try spooling THAT turbo. |
needs vtec yo |
http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/318...geturbojf4.jpg lol.. you can hide in there to jerk off and nobody will notice you! hahaz |
WTLY. Very old. |
wow thats really cool |
die cast ductile cast iron is absolutely positively nothing special whatsoever. Cool engines though =) |
price tag ? |
i would not want to be anywhere near that turbo when it spools up.... if you thought the GT45 was loud... |

I wonder if you can mod that thing.... |

As for boost, let's just leave it to - "Too much..". |
if you think about it.... a normal freightliner diesel truck is like 40-60psi....and those turbos are huge compared to what we're used to... i don't even want to attempt to comprehend the amount of boost that thing will make... quantifying the number will tear the fabric of reality asunder. |
Oh shit... that's going on my wishlist. |

i can imagine blackholes appearing on full boost |
wonder how loud the BOV would be lol |
Where does one mount the intercooler? Front of ship would need to be custom jdm modified to fit it yo |
