Actually, I heard somewhere (unverified) that 1 in 10 people actually have a different father than who they think he should be (ie your mom slept around). Kinda scary, but unfortunately, not too farfetched if you think about it.
I'd hate to do the explaining to the kids. What would be the exact words to use?
