There are so many good reasons to buy nice clothes. You can tell a lot about a person from their sense of style and dress.

Most young people buy expensive clothes cause they want to impress. There's little reason to be wearing LV, Gucci, ... and shopping on Robson/at Holt Renfrew unless you're dressing to impress. Most of the designer crap you couldn't wear to a 9-5 office job.

Dress clothes never go out of style and always look expensive and impress. A properly tailored suit, pants, dress shirt will always be in style and make you look worth more than rocking some designer crap that will go out of style in a year.

If you have $$$ you can afford to wait for sales and drop a lot of $$$ to buy more for less. I find those buying designer/expensive clothing are buying 1-2 items at a time cause they cannot afford to drop a lot, just enough for a few pieces to impress the few nights a month the are out.

I read someone point this out. Why would ppl who modify their cars buy the expensive parts rather than a no name part that does the same job.

That's how ppl feel about clothing, it last longer, looks way better, etc.

/topic.

Hardly. Its for the bling.

People like to criticize "fake" or "replica" parts.
I have replica wheels on my car, cause at $250/each they are $950 a wheel less than originals. They are a bit heavier and weaker, yet I can buy 4 for the price of 1, and no-one buys 19" wheels for performance applications, its for the bling.

That's true, I guess I was referring more about the question of "why". Some ppl like expensive clothing, some ppl like expensive parts....If you can afford it, why not.

Anyways, back on topic to clothes, it's a bit hard to say as I don't usually like high end clothing because of the expense when a low-mid end clothing will suffice.

However, when the quality is justified, I will be more than happy to spend that cash.

I think it's subjective. People will pay for high-end money for high-end quality. However, there are just some people who will pay just for the sake that it's high-end regardless.

Agreed.

That, or they finally landed themselves a job that pays $14/hour and flaunt it by buying expensive clothes thinking they're a hot commodity.

I buy designer clothing for the fit and quality and most of the designer clothing I own is very subtle and low key and only someone that knows their stuff would know its designer. Suits, blazers, jeans and dress shirts should, in most cases, always be designer because of the amazing fit and quality but you shouldn't be dropping too much money for designer casual wear.

Are you in Grade 3? Where in my post did I say competence is not important? Its obviously the most important factor. The difference is, the most competent people also understand that they have to maximize every opportunity they possibly can, which includes their appearance and presentation.

Or find a good tailor who will make you clothes with better fabric, perfect fit, and for less.

On the west coast, especially cities like LA and Vancouver, half of those who drop a bucketload of money on clothing dress terribly. Tasteless $300 denim (that is not any better constructed than a $40 pair of Levi's) and brand-name $90 T-shirts (again, more or less same level of quality as a $25 t-shirt at any other retail outlet) purchased solely for brand name and appeal only to mind-numbingly impressionable women. That sort of money spent on clothing is wasted.

Someone who is truly stylish is able to dress well on a budget; it's easy to outdo the sensibilities of the above. It's then easy understand most people's negative reactions to those who spend a lot of clothing. Based on popular example, people spend money on clothing and still end up looking awful. Those who spend money on clothing but do not look like they do are generally those who truly possess style; you can't replace a bespoke suit and carefully chosen matching shoes and belt and a sharply fitting trenchcoat with H&M knockoffs, but a T-shirt and jeans is just a t-shirt and jeans.

My 2 cents, anyway.

It's okay I dropped out of high school at the age of 15, I work at McDonalds in the kitchen and I sell my body on weekends to make ends meet. The main stores I go to are Value Village, Army & Navy and I found this awesome second hand store on Main Street. It's great because vintage is back and people love my sense of style!

I got lucky once and found a DKNY shirt!
