Part of what you see is from lack of proper training and part from people who don't give a da,m about other people. WTF would they switch to the left lane on the hwy and go the speed limit? It's because they don't care about other drivers and only about themselves.
ICBC has been preaching to LML drivers to slow down and to drive responsibly, so guess what. I'm sure most of the people here are doing what ICBC is advertising on the TV. Do not accelerate too rapidly from a green light. Slow down for a stale green that is about to change to a yellow even though you have no clue when the light will change.

Another issue is that in asia, the cost of driving a car is so high. To own a liscence will cost you money. Buying a car, getting insurance, hell parking the car cost money. So most people do not drive in asia but do so when they come to Canada. And because they lack experience, they suck at driving. They think a big Benz will keep them safe so they go out and buy a base model Benz with no options to try to look baller.

Ikkaku 05-25-2009 09:41 PM

Also in China, their driving styles are all equally bad. They all suck at driving, so in a sense they equal each other out :lol

just add in a few 'better' drivers in there and the harmony is destroyed... that's when the major accidents come in.

when I go around Guangzhou, it feels as though there are no real laws for driving, just avoid getting hit and you'll be fine. It is kind of funny, when one car swerves, the ones around it swerve along with it. Over here, people would drive defensively, which results in an accident :lol

Not defending their driving, just something I observed.

twitchyzero 05-25-2009 09:43 PM

yawn..topic's been beaten to death

I rather get frustrated at the c -lai that drives at 40km/h in her Lexus RX than some prick on a scooter who doesnt slow down for pedestrians on a crosswalk (common practice in TW, vehicle right of way > peds)

CRS 05-25-2009 09:45 PM

DDauge... Is that you?

v.Rossi 05-25-2009 09:53 PM

i don't know about you guys, but when made a mistake on the road when i was a learner, i would think what i did wrong and how it could've been avoided. at times it would just ruin my day because i felt like sucha shitty driver. but, i learnt from my mistakes. i don't know why a majority of the inexperienced/bad drivers don't think like this.

anyways, the only thing i fear now are the people who don't shoulder check, and people who can't drive straight.

off-topic though, i fucking love driving. i'm willing to drive literally everywhere, except i have my lazy moments at night when i'm tired.

straight up fact right there....

way2quik 05-25-2009 11:15 PM

Another factor is those who can't drive probably do not have their L or N's slapped on the back of their car.

I know one who drives a car alone who had his L for only a week. No sign on the back of his car.

Death2Theft 05-25-2009 11:53 PM

The thing with the lowermainland and how people think all asians are rich is completely wrong. The majority of asians you see here are doing well enough to afford to leave their country and come here. In HK the tax on cars is like 100% on top of the normal price. So when these wealthy retirees come here and see cars cost half price you dont really think they are gonna buy a smartcar now do you?

J____ 05-26-2009 12:02 AM

well in china. alot of ppl who can afford cars have drivers cuz they cost pennies. those ppl that come here are forced to drive their own car, and obviously not as skilled as their drivers

Why would I say that? Because only a very very small fraction of people in HK regularly operates a motor vehicle. Compared to Vancouver where everyone goes out to get a DL and a car too expensive/complex for their own good you have a chance to sample "what if all the people drive" scenario in Vancouver.

Whereas in Asia, you either LOVE driving (that means you are good at it, usually) or you do it for a living (you BETTER be good at it).... There's that issue of "sampling the population" in statistics here....

why the meth lab? I just thought it's related. You know....

Maybe you should request a sign that says that intersection is a high accident area, like the one they have on Canada Way and Willingdon. Since Richmond has such bad drivers, there should be tons of signs ready to be placed to warn drivers.

thumper 05-26-2009 06:34 AM

my friends says they should send everyone in BC to take their driving test in ontario... he worked in ontario for a few months and driving there at rush hour put the fear of god into him :o

hotjoint 05-26-2009 06:57 AM

people are just too busy with their own shit while they're driving to notice or care about anyone else on the road.

fuck ICBC

as if im gonna take their advice

accelerate slowly off the line..lol no wonder the traffic is always fucking backed up. Because everyone revs 2000rpm in 1st gear that takes them 12 seconds to get to 0-60km

Take Richmond for example, Alot of Chinese immigrants in Richmond really can't drive for shit, its a known fact. But, if you ever visit Taiwan, China or Hong Kong, where these immigrants come from, you will be amazed at the driving / parking skills people have there. In Taiwan I have seen alot of people park within literally milimeters bumper to bumper and never scratch.
Also people react very quickly to changing traffic lights and move / stop accordingly. The traffic flow is much more smooth there.

Once you are back in Canada you feel the streets are filled with idiots who are not only slow (wait for couple seconds after green lights) and stupid (stopping on a green light for no particular reasons), regardless Chinese or not. When the light turn green, theres always cars that had to hestitate for a bit and then move on, and then the car behind it would often takes moments to respond and the move on. The result is letting go maybe just 10 cars in a green light while there are literally over 50 cars stuck behind.

I have also seen a news from Germany that on autobahn, although the traffic speed there is very high, traffic death and injuries are much lower comparing to North American highways. another reason why we cant have no speed limits here.

What is wrong here?

lol, cuz the people that drive here are rich wives, they don't drive in taiwan or china or HK, their drivers do. but drivers here cost a fuck lot more than asia, so they have to drive themselves here.

oh also, it's basically survival of the fittest in asia (on the road... and in real life haha). but anyways, on the road, if you're a shit ass driver, you're gonna die or lose your car (a lot). only the drivers that are actually good can "afford" to drive. think of it this way, in asia it's like this. every car is an ant, and we're all in one big colony of tunnels and whatever (roads). every ant is going their own fucking way, sometimes all together in one way, but no one really has lanes, they just go whichever way they want, but amazingly no one hits each other and everyone is really good at anticipating the next ants moves.

that's how asians drive. oh i also noticed, lol you only basically have to watch for who's directly beside you or infront of you. fuck the people behind you. or slightly behind/beside you (to a degree). if you turn, the people behind/beside are responsible for getting out of the way. if you were slightly beside/behind and there was enough room for him to aggressively squeeze his way in, that would be your fault. hah so everyone is always tailgating everyone going as fast as you can.

asia... i assume new york or any other super fast pace city, is like the above. honks are constantly heard if you're on the street. honks are used like turn signals, they're used to say thanks, they're used to say fuck you, they're used to say "hey anticipate my next move".

step 1:
check if there is any one DIRECTLY exactly 90 degrees beside where your body is towards the direction you are turning, if they are slightly behind you (more than 90 degrees) it means you can squeeze your way in and they'll slow down to let you in.
step 2:
signal if you want, *honk*
step 3:
change lanes without shoulder checking

done. haha. that is the asian turn.

I am merely doing a comparision of the driving skills here and you have to bring the racial question out.

As long as the Canadian government needs money they will welcome rich immigrants with open arms. dont like it? move to alberta to be with your kind.

Racist pricks like you shouldnt even be on here. The accident of my brother is a true story and if its my own incident I wouldnt hesistate to say its myself. Its the internet theres nothing to be ashamed of.

Just because you think you can drive like a hotshot doesn't mean you're good at driving at all. It's really only a display of the extent of your maturation.

With a system like ours, the definition of a good driver are the ones who have the following rare attributes: patience & courtesy.

Seriously, with overconfidence such as yours, you're just an accident waiting to happen. Thank God your license is suspended.

Mancini 05-26-2009 09:18 AM

The worst drivers I have ever seen, by far, were in Rome (of the places I have travelled). Each two lane road turns into 5. 2 for cars and 3 more for scooters around them. Sitting at an intersection, when lights are still red, and traffic going the other way gets a yellow light everyone starts honking for the train to move. And I mean everyone. All the time.

The best drivers I have ever seen were in Switzerland. Calm, controlled and swift. Ultimate respect for pedestrians. Perfect lane management on the highways. People always moved out of the left lane proactively, not because there was someone behind them, but because it was their duty to move out of the passing lane unless actually passing. A car could accelerate as fast as it liked in the left lane and would never be held up, because people would make an extra point to move out of the way. It was even better than Germany in this respect.

1 block radius = 4 intersections..... they all happened on different ones...Well specifically 2 in the same one and another one on the other end of the block.

Sunny day, flat road, and I came home seeing an upside down SUV, that's how people roll in Richmond (pun intended).

No I dont drive like a hotshot, nowhere in my thread did I mention that I do, Iin fact I noticed its mostly rednecks that drive bigass trucks and suvs (with truck beds empty and single occupancy 99% of the time) that drive like a hotshot and caused most of the road rage. What ethincity are of those drivers? I don't even want to go there.

I'm only coming out at you because you mentioned about going back to china and such and such, that is totally unncessary.

The system here encourages courtesy and paitence, and I have no problem with that, but courtesy and paitence doesn't equal stupidity and arrogance. the way I see it, people who drives at 40km/hr where it is allowed at 60km/hr and backing up the traffic simply have no regard for others. they just care about themseves. This is not courtesy my friend.

And no. My license is not suspended. I was asking that question for my brother. I am a health care professional and I have never had a violation before. Learn to read.

I think honking is banned in HK, and major cities in China.

At least my hometown GZ.

I'd have to rate worst parkers are in the lowermainland. My bumpers on my car were so beat up from ppl hitting my car n driving off w/o a note or anything. And ya.. worst drivers are from kelowna, so if u head down this way.. make sure u have good insurance, or a rental

Actually I remember reading somewhere that the VPD actually encourages multiple cars to turn left on red, to improve the flow of traffic. Imagine if ONLY 1 car turned per red at intersections like King Ed eastbound onto Knight northbound. And yes, people who scrape up others' bumpers suck and should die.

thats just wrong.. imo

It goes both ways. One trip to BCAA with $15 and we can drive in the UK. My BCDL license also transferred directly to HK for some $100 with no tests required. Mind you, if you just remember to do things in reverse, driving isn't actually that hard just because it's mirrored. Look right then left.. Darwinism works here.

Yeah driving tests here are pretty bad. I've seen some people pass after being unable to park their Corolla into the lot behind ICBC after their road tests. With that said, people just need to calm down and go with the flow of traffic. I'm sure most road rage incidents involves someone's pride when they get cut off or something. Some nice non-angry music helps here. :) Why tailgate the guy in front of you when that saves you about 1s.. then you cause an accident and tack on 30 mins to everyone else behind you. What we do need though are more bridges/tunnels. Ever try to go between Vancouver and the North shore when one bridge is closed?

Actually if you knew what was good for you, you'd wait a second or so before crossing a green. I've saved myself several times from getting T-boned by people who blow through red lights. I remember one particular incident where the girl in the lane beside me got nailed and driven into a light pole instead of me because of that split-second delay. With that said, I'm wondering why there's so much opposition to red-light cameras. Personally I'd want them at ALL major intersections.

And you think that people here can handle no speed limits? I'm all for raising limits to 130-150km/h on highways. You'd probably get a dozen fatalities per highway per day though until all the crappy drivers kill themselves off. ;)
