Math brain fart help

i've been out of school for too long and im having a brain fart here

an example:

if a total is $155 including 5% tax, what is the sub total without tax? i cant remember the formula.

edit: cleared up the question

billboa 05-27-2009 10:01 AM

its 155 x .05 = 7.75 + 155

162.75

or are you asking how much without tax? you can pretty much do it backwards itll be a bit off, i dont know the exact formula. so like around $148.50-$149

CRS 05-27-2009 10:02 AM

$155x.95% (of total)= $147.25

This is wrong.... ughhh let me think about this.

147.62 would be your answer.

Since 147.62 x .05 = 7.381
7.381 + 147.62 = 155.001

Which is pretty much as close as it is going to get.

It was already included. He is looking to before the taxes were added on as he said it was "included with 5%".

liu13 05-27-2009 10:04 AM

155 x (100% - 5%) = ??

i think that's it

RRxtar 05-27-2009 10:12 AM

we are going the oposite way here. trying to figure out how much without tax. so you cant simply subtract the % from the total

155*5%=7.75
155-7.75 = 147.25
but 147.25+5% does not equal 155

i figured it out the equasion but i suck at working it thru
X + (X * 0.05) = 155

edit: once i remembered that y is, infact, a number, and put a 1 infront of it, it was easy. god ive been out of school for too long!

1y+0.05y=155
1.05y=155
y=155/1.05
y= 147.6190476 or 147.62

InvisibleSoul 05-27-2009 10:12 AM

$155 / 1.05 = $147.62
$147.62 * 1.05 = $155

ChaKo 05-27-2009 10:14 AM

^ what he said

x + 0.05x = 155

m!chael 05-27-2009 01:51 PM

LOL math is definitely not revscenes domain

the right answer... 155 is INCORRECT

q0192837465 05-27-2009 02:25 PM

x times 1.05 = 155

155/1.05 = 147.62

Check

147.62 x 1.05 = 155.001

Gumby 05-27-2009 02:37 PM

How many more times will people post the solution - when it has been posted already?! :p

slammer111 05-27-2009 04:27 PM

The lack of mathematical ability here never fails to amaze. :lol

Shun Izaki 05-27-2009 08:47 PM

omg, we're all retarded hahha...

then again, i've never used anything over math 9 in real life.

included for great justice

Remember the fireman jingle and the Jared jingle? I avoided Subway just because of those commercials.

Oh yea..

x * 1.05 = $155
x = $155/1.05

shenmecar 05-28-2009 11:47 AM

this thread is funny. it just made my day!

TRDCeli 05-28-2009 12:02 PM

155 / 1.05 = 147.62
147.62 x 1.05 = 155.00

Thats it!

hotjoint 05-28-2009 12:24 PM

I hate math

_Hotsauce_ 05-28-2009 01:26 PM

I win; Also, this site is incredible if you have ANY math related questions, havn't really played around with it for anything else. It's like Google for equations.

Also, I feel sorry for the OP because that's really really really fucking basic math....I don't really understand how you could forget that O_o

drunkrussian 05-28-2009 02:12 PM

lol @ how long it took for an answer

RenoMan 05-28-2009 02:24 PM

you guys are ridiculous especially op, it just a reverse question.
