Quick question about Costco membership

I'm thinking of applying for a Costco membership card in order to purchase something. I don't normally shop at Costco so my only reason for getting a card is to make this purchase.

Anyway my question is, I read that Costco will refund your membership at any time if you are dissatisfied. Does anyone know how it works? Do you have to at least purchase something at least once? Is it a no questions asked kinda thing? How long does it take to get the refund?

I just don't plan on paying $50 for a yearly membership just for one item.

thanks!

Why don't you get one of your friends with a Costco membership to buy the item for you? It's better than going through that whole process just to get one thing.

nipples 05-31-2009 05:12 PM

unless i'm mistaken, if you refund your membership, you will also lose the ability to take advantage of the refund policy and their double warranty

ZhangFei 05-31-2009 05:22 PM

you will ultimately save money when shopping in costco, even with the $50.

everything is in bulk though... lol

Costco is worth it, though. Sure it's bulk, but it's great for stocking up on consumables, especially when they go on sale, like TP.

Unfortunately nobody I know shops at Costco. Most of them go to the Canadian Wholesale Club or Walmart.

So yeah lol

Agree. One Time Purchase like you plan.
Get a Costco Gift Card. Even $25 can do it and pay the rest with cash or debit.

fo sho! gives you the benefits of being able to go to costco without having to ever buy a membership

KingDeeCee 05-31-2009 06:10 PM

Hmmm, Don't they have an exclusive membership card? Like you get points everytime you shop and you get like 5% of all your purchases back. And if you don't shop over $45 you get $45 back? Or does the card cost more than $45?

orange7 05-31-2009 06:32 PM

what is the one item that you want to buy?

I actually went to get a card today and the executive card you get 2% cash back annually. Over a year you would get back $48 minimum assuming you spend $200/month which would cover the difference between a Gold Star card and the Executive card making it worth it. Of course if you spend more then $200/month you get more.

I was previously just doing the gift card thing but with a membership I get a free spouse card for my gf and it's just easier.

I do believe they give you the $48 even if you don't spend over $200 a month.

You can buy online and pay a small fee for not having a card. I did this, cost me $10 with free shipping for some shelves I wanted.

E=mc˛ 05-31-2009 08:34 PM

Alright thanks
but I guess no one here has tried getting a refund eh?

Well I need to not only buy something but I wanted to get a free fitting and try out one of their contact lenses (the Air Optix Aqua) because due to my dry eyes, I just wanted to see whether those might be more comfortable. At my optometrist, the bitch at the counter won't let me have a trial and gives me such a rude attitude (she also did that to my friend when he went to have his eyes examined), which pisses me off because trial contacts are FREE for optometrists, they get samples directly from the manufacturer.

So yeah, that's why I need a membership, because not only am I buying something, I also need to get fitted for contacts at their optical department.

The money I save from buying gas alone pays for dozens of memberships a year.

wahyinghung 05-31-2009 10:24 PM

Another way to get free membership is to get a job there........

ilvtofu 05-31-2009 10:29 PM

definitely use the gift card, you can refill it and everything too.
Get all the benefits and none of the drawbacks. and really theres nothing to lose, tons of ppl can find a good use to a costco giftcard.

dark0821 05-31-2009 11:57 PM

Er, you go to Costco and buy one, like every other store.

InvisibleSoul 06-01-2009 10:55 AM

Don't you have to be an existing member to buy a gift card?
