how do i find out what type of ram is in my laptop?

I have a Sony Vaio VGN series laptop, it's about 1.5 year old now and it only has 512mb of ram, id like to upgrade but when i click on properties for my computer it does not show the type of ram that is in it

do i have to open up the case to see whats in it? also is there a limit to how much i can add?

oh and im running the windows 7 beta if that makes a difference, it is also the main reason why i want to add more ram.

Pop open the RAM cover and look at it... It's usually only one phillips screw. It's not hard.

http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php -> CPU-Z 1.51 .zip -> open cpuz.exe -> click on memory -> click on spd -> change slots as needed -> jot down information

LOL

But wtf..how come it says 1gig but only shows 512?

I swear it must have been 1gig when I bought it cause I wouldn't have bought a laptop with 512..

Also when I had xp loaded on I could run photoshop, vegas, etc with no problems but now with 7 loaded on at idle in using like 85%

Well, you can upgrade to 2GBs, doesn't really matter anymore. You probably had 2x512mb but one maybe failed or lost connection.

So either way, you would need to get 2x1GB ram and then you would reach your capacity.

How did you not find the model?! Let me guess, you search VGN instead of FE, amirite?

Hondaracer 06-12-2009 10:32 AM

I didn't do a search, I just got to the list of all the sonys and it didn't have mine there?

Did you have a screen like Soundy has?

Because you did, that technically is a search. Just a selection search by categories instead of by typing a model name.

google cpu-z and download. it's a tiny small program that shows CPU/memory/motherboard information. It tells you exactly what speed the memory is in your computer and the memory manufacture.

Hondaracer 06-12-2009 11:16 AM

So I want to max out the ram, but are there other types availblw that are compatible or what?

Because on Ncix I'm looking for that DDR2 533 PC2 4200 and it seems like they don't have ant of that same memory?

I would replace whatever it's in there.

1GB 533 DDR2 is $20.
2GB 800 DDR2 is $25 only.

Thank me, thank me. :)

Hondaracer 06-12-2009 11:31 AM

Don't worry, multiple thanks are in order :)

Just kinda hard to coordinate things on my iPhone :)

Hondaracer 06-12-2009 11:32 AM

Oh and I can go to that 800 with no problems? It's all compatible?

as long as u replaced them all, it should be ok.
if your memory controller doesn't take advantage of the extra speed, it will slow down to match the controller speed.

Try not to mix and match them. It will work in theory, but not recommended.

Hondaracer 06-13-2009 10:07 PM

bought that $25 ram from NCIX today, works great thanks alot guys much appreciated

ecsw 06-13-2009 11:49 PM

not yet, max out at 3GB on 32bits. :) it will show 4gb in bios, but only 3gb in windows.

it's like paying for 2nd stick of "1gb" for $25. :p but it's better than later you can't find the memory any more. :) But again, it might be cheaper later when you started to run 64bits. :p
