Arrow China bans Renault vehicles because it's not safe enough

China Bans Some Renaults from Import, Saying They Don't Meet Safety Standards
Date posted: 06-12-2009

SHANGHAI, China — The Chinese government has turned back 160 Renault Laguna, Scénic, and Mégane cars coming into the country, saying they failed to meet Chinese safety regulations. The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said Renault needs to revise its quality control to meet Chinese standards. Renault responded that the group of vehicles was somehow damaged in storage or travel.

A Renault spokeswoman quoted by Bloomberg News Thursday said the cars were all built in 2007 and are believed to have been in storage since that time. Renault said it would send experts to China to investigate the situation.

Bloomberg noted that Renault was warned last year by the Chinese government about failure to report a defect in its Mégane and Clio. The warning was removed several months later after Renault corrected the problem.

It's not stating that China is refusing Renault to sell their cars in China; rather, it's barred a specific shipment of a few cars because of what sounds like existing damage, though whether it's body or engine, who knows. Nothing wrong with that. I'm sure any other country would do it as well.

The move is political. Paris made the Dalai Lama an "honorary citizen" while he criticized China in France.

Hahahaha I love the implication that somehow Europe's crash standards are lower than China's!

And that the Cherry line of vehicles that fails so spectacularly in crashes is better than Renault's.

I don't think this is about crash safety, it says it's a recall, so maybe something just doesn't work on these cars, Wheel bearings? ABS? airbags? tons of things that can affect safety so it's prolly not crash testing, especially when it's only 160

Funny, it wasn't that long ago when Japanese cars were considered unsafe tin cans.
