RICHMOND (NEWS1130) - The City of Richmond doesn't want any trouble associated with the Canada Line when it opens (expected in August). Richmond's RCMP detachment is going to have a special patrol--called the 'STAR TEAM'--to look after the area around the Canada Line stations.

Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie says Transit Police will look after security on the train and in the stations, and the RCMP will patrol around the stations. "These three constables on the STAR TEAM would be specifically responsible for the areas around the stations, concentrating on the 250 metres closest to the station."

Brodie says they want to kick-off the opening of the line with a heavy police presence to let people know their security concerns are being addressed. He says special consideration was also given to the Canada Line station across from the River Rock Casino, which will have a community police station staffed by both the transit police and RCMP.

It was actually slated to open in winter 2009. They bumped it up 3 months early to labour day (which many suspect to be the real target date from the beginning anyways). Less people on my bus to school this fall, i'm all for it.

Until they install turnstile, it's pointless. I bet the Transit Police will have their squad cars in Richmond though.

One of Malcolm Brodie's (Mayor) requirements for his agreement to build the line in Richmond was the installation of turnstiles. However, since the line is opening ahead of schedule, it will be half a year before turnstiles will be used - and without the type of monitoring/flow of traffic like they do in HK's MTR, I am sure "jumping them stiles" will become a daily sight.

Well, it's ok. I mean those who insist on not paying will jump. But for those who are borderline & are testing their luck everytime, it'll be a good incentive for them to pay up.

if ur going to work in vancouver/dt or school at sfu, it's a way better alternative than either b-lining with smelly hobo asses in your face (here there's still hobo asses, but it's a shorter trip), or bussing to new west, getting stabbed and skytraining from there to sfu with hobo asses in your face (once again, same ass, less time)

woot for canada line
