OSX PC question

So I have been out of the computer scene for a bit now, but I want to build a PC to use OSX and Vista Ultimate on it.

What kind of specs should I be looking at? I would like both operating systems to run quickly, and I'm by no means a gamer, that's why I have my Xbox.

I'm looking for the best bang for my buck. Maybe a AMD Phenom II 920 or 940 or something.

Thanks for your help guys.

OS X86 will be easier to install and have less problems if you build with components that are identical to a real Mac. I recommend Intel everything. http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

^ exactly!

use intel and most compatible hardware as possible

I used q6600 with an Intel mobo, intel on board graphics 2Gb of ram and 250GB harddrive
ran with no problems but once I used my 4870 didnt work, 9800GT didnt work GTX250 worked, so sometimes it might be trial and error

i'd just buy a mac and install windows

OSX86 is a pain in the ass to install and get it working, and i had the most compatible hardware. best i could do was install 10.5.2 and found updating it was too annoying so i gave up on OSX86

hmm this is interesting, so i'm guessing OSX wont work on a full blown gaming machine eh.

you need to get more specific than bang for your buck.

do you really need OSX? I hackinoshed for a bit but I found it was useless to me anyways so I scrapped it.

You should probably forget about doing updates to OS X unless someone else has tested the updates first. You can easily wreck the whole install. The updates aren't really necessary. I haven't update my XP since SP3 came out.

OS X will work fine for a gaming machine as long as there is driver for the video card. In most case there is a Linux or generic driver that will work. All the other gaming extras like lots of RAM and Overclocking are invisible to the OS. A SoundBlaster card usually never works in OS X (because Macs don't use them).

^ ok thanks for the info, BUT, if i use generic video card driver, will it affect rendering performance, like let say, in photoshop?

I'm thinking the best bet is to pick out a Mac with the specs you like, then build it as a PC for half the price, and you shouldn't have any driver issues

the ideneb release (osx 10.5.6) has a pretty decent list of PC video cards that would work. you can try looking into that one.

this release worked very well for me with the exception of audio but i found linux drivers that worked for my ALC889 onboard sound. here's the system i have with windows 7 and leopard 10.5.6

Gigabyte P35-DS3P Mobo
Intel E6750 OC'ed to 3.2 Ghz
OCZ DDR2-800 Platinum RAM 4GB
E-VGA Nvidia 8600GT
