What do people think of Acer?

I'll admit I always thought Acer stuff was complete garbage. I know their netbooks are pretty good but I'm looking at their new Timeline notebooks and it seems like they've improved a ton.

$749 at bestbuy for a 3.5 lb 13.3" laptop, 4GB ram, 320GB HDD, and a low voltage Intel SU2700. The reviews say the battery life is about 7-8 hours too.

Anyways, thinking of getting either this or maybe the Dell Studio 14z. Anyone have an Acer Timeline notebook (specifically the AS3810T variant)?

Dell all the way.

Presto 06-30-2009 07:43 AM

Dell Warranty > Acer Warranty

Dell, you can deal with locally, while Acer requires you to ship it out to Ontario.

dell

My aspire 1410 is around 7 years old and still going strong. It's been around the world, and hasn't given me a single problem. It's still on the original XP installation too.

I'm probably in the minority though.

Mr.HappySilp 06-30-2009 09:22 AM

I am using an Acer 6920g atm. Used it for about 8months or so with no issue. Friend bought a HP laptop around the same have nothing but problems. So I can acer is pretty good.

TekDragon 06-30-2009 10:17 AM

Viewing this on a 22" Acer. No dead pixels, haven't had an issue with it. Owned this LCD for 4 years now. I had a laptop from them once. Still runs fine.

Presto 06-30-2009 10:24 AM

Acer laptops aren't bad... it's just their support isn't nearly as good as Dell's. So, if you do happen to have a problem, it's a lot easier dealing with Dell.

Their netbooks suck (most returned netbook by a long shot) and that Timeline laptop is FUCKING BRUTAL when it comes to performance. Slowest laptop I have on the computer wall out of the box by far.

Acer's support has also fallen through the floor, the one and only thing they had going for them. I refuse to recommend Acer under any circumstances these days.

Acer is supposedly to take the #2 spot over Dell for biggest PC industry.

RFlush 06-30-2009 12:03 PM

Asus all the way

If you're talking about quality, none of the Acer products in my home has died. That includes a laptop, and a couple of LCD monitors.

Not true. Acer has contracted service dealer in Burnaby. I dropped off my Aspire One there and returned around 1 week by Fedex.

That's true. the news was out yesterday I believe.

Doesn't matter Dell/Acer/HP/Toshiba, most of them were made by Compal/Quanta/Asus/Foxconn's plant in China. It's all about service/warranty preferrence.

I am sure Dell is great now. But back in the day when Michale stepped down, they used crappy support center from East India with noticeable lag and echo on the phone. That was the nightmare.

They wouldn't correct their problem they made for the item I purchased on-line. They forgot to put 20% discount off accessories on my order which my on-line invoice printed showed. But decided to charge me full amount on my credit card. I called and got routed to the East Indian support center and got the replied "sorry sir, we can not modify or return you the money because item was invoiced", "would you like a free mouse pad for it?" WTF? It wasn't a lot of money, I hang up and tell her to keep the mouse pad. That's when I stopped buying Dell and never purchase a Dell for my company ever since.

But Michael Dell is back now and removed the "East Indian support" contract. It should be much better with Dell now.

That I also agree. I have many LG/Samsung monitor and even few LCD dead, but out of 50+ LCD from Acer, only 1 needs repair after 2 years.

the # 1 reason people return these these netbooks is because of the stupid users. it's a netbook not a notebook, no wonder people are having a tough time listening to MP3, doing MSN and then watch video and then surf the internet with 5 different tabs with MS word all going on the same time. it' snot suppose to replace a noteboook.

that I agree too. Plus the small screen, it's suitable for quick email and quick web surfing only.

Acer or Dell, I am sure they are all good. It's the support that's more important and it's also the personal preference imo.

Yeah but the Timeline has a low voltage processor and I know it's not a Core 2 Duo so I wasn't expecting the fastest performance anyways. I'm using a netbook as my main computer now and the performance is more than good enough for what I use a laptop for.

I'm not sure where else you can get a $750 13" laptop that is as thin and light as the Acer Timeline with such long battery life that nearly outlasts my netbook.

twitchyzero 06-30-2009 03:54 PM

acer has always been the cheaper version of asus haha.

either way, they're both taiwan brands and i support them both!

jroc12 08-08-2009 03:05 PM

i was able to get the core 2 duo version of the acer timeline and i have to say it is sick! most retail stores in canada dont offer this version but i got it through a small business company. 14 inch, 8 hour battery life, processor is a little weak in terms of gaming but has no problem playing 1080p hd video. super thin, light ... good university laptop i guess.

jtap1 08-11-2009 11:37 AM

I had an Acer 17'' CRT back in the days and it lasted 10 years before going out.
The Sony 19'' CRT only lasted 5 years.
Also currently have an Acer 19'' LCD and Acer Travelmate4000 that has lasted 5~ years with no problems.
Also own a Dell 23'' LCD for almost 1/2 yr, no problems so far as well.

Mugen EvOlutioN 08-11-2009 12:15 PM

its like..the cheapest among other brands??

Psykopathik 08-11-2009 06:22 PM

asian_XL 08-11-2009 07:42 PM

^ LOL..."2 Anus computers tightly packed in one box. It will smell a little bit, but it will go away 30 minutes later"
