I always put it in gear + pull the e-brake. It's a habit, and it's the right thing to do if you love your car.

why do you guys call it an e-brake (emergency-brake) its actually called a PARK BRAKE...
pulling up the "emergency brake" in an emergency isn't gonna save anyone since rear only does ~20% of braking .... just my 2 cents

SkinnyPupp 07-03-2009 08:55 AM

I think the hand brake started out as the emergency brake. Now you can call it whatever you want - hand brake, e-brake, actually "parking brake" is the least traditional

^ drift handle!

When I park, I usually just throw the car in neutral whiles slowing down and use my brake and ebrake to stop and then put my car in Park... I just bought a brand new car so I do this so there is less stress on the tranny.... And if the car ever did roll because of the ebrake then the tranny would just catch it...

I do out of habit mostly, plus i feel uncomfortable with the roll

On a second note, remember to do a brake inspection especially on drum brake systems. Sometimes you need to calibrate it(adjust the shoes) so the Parking brake actually works. I don't know how many times I've driven cars that can still move at a fast pace even with the parking brake all the way up!!! It's crazy.....

ebrake is a set mechanical resistance you'll always be able to overpower it and drive. sure adjusting shoes will help it hold, but you'll always be able to drive away with it on.

on acura too. my dad's mdx is step onto the foot brake to engage, and pull a level to disengage.

I never use the e brake in a auto car though, never found the need to. Park gear will stop it from rolling anyways. On my manual car though, i pull ebrake and put it into 1st. Sometimes i forget to pull the e brake but i ALWAYS remember to put it into 1st

ilvtofu 07-03-2009 12:40 PM

oh that's why it's called parking brake

hotong 07-03-2009 12:44 PM

i do it all the time in manual or auto just a habbit

e-brakes on except after tracking, putting on the e-brake while the rotors are still roasting hot can bend the rotors

sooooooo SMART. i dooo that all the time when i got to N Van or when im on a hill. so u dont have to jam it into gear when taking off. let the world know if this hahaha. and e-break on flat land, is reallly not necessary.

you 07-03-2009 01:38 PM

what kinda question is this?
if ur car didn't require it then it wouldnt be there this should just be common sense

JSALES 07-03-2009 02:00 PM

isn't using the e-brake common sense though? i've seen my neighbours car roll on the street sometimes

i've seen an auto car roll away with the trans in park after being bumped by another car in a parking lot. it happened to a co-worker at an old job when this truck bumped her civic and it started rolling down an incline, making that loud ticking sound (the pin/parking pawl/whatever it's called in the trans broke) all the way down until it hopped the curb and stopped. and no she didn't use her parking brake.
