Should I buy a new computer?

I am using an Athlon 900mhz pc with 1gb of ram and an ati 9800 videocard.. Running xp pro. It runs smooth and quick for everything i do. Browsing, listen to music, watch divx movies and burning dvd's, play some online flash games and thats about it. I have upgrade everything except the cpu. When my friends come over, they see a nice 23" monitor with a nice sound system and wireless keybarod and mouse, they think i've got a awesome system until they check the specs haha.

I love tech, i have all the lastest like iphone, ps3 for my gaming needs, stuff like that, do i need a better pc?

I have used this computer for like 6 or 7 years now and computers are so cheap these days, should i buy a new computer? or should i just spend the money on some other stuff. Discuss? do anyone here also own older systems and don't mind not having a new one. Sometimes I wish my pc would die on me to give me an excuse to buy a new one, but it never dies and i leave it on day and night. The only thing i replace was powersupply.

If it's fine for what you do, then there's no point in getting a new one, especially if you're satisfied with it.

LoL... if it does everything you want it to do, then what's the point of upgrading? To live up to your friend's expectations of what they think your computer should be?

On the other hand, a new machine WILL save you some time... just loading up applications like your Internet browser will save you a few seconds here and there...

But I would say once you find one real reason to get a new machine, do it... otherwise I don't see why you should feel the need to switch.

yeah, my friends say that i am the only person that he knows that still uses a single core cpu that hasn't even reach the ghz ranges.

Do you really think getting a new pc would save me time with opening some apps like firefox and msn? when i start firefox it's pretty instant, i don't see any lag. Word takes a few sec to open but by no means slow.

The only thing new inside is 2 500gb hd's to store all the movies and music. If i get a new pc will they support my IDE hard drives? Arn't all new pc sata only?

I think most motherboards still come with one IDE connector, which you could connect up to two IDE hard drives on...

But I've been in your position before... I generally have fairly long computer buying cycles. I used a 386 until around 1997, and then used a Pentium II until 2003 or so?

I was also fine with it, but a newer computer definitely feels faster.

If it ain't broken don't fix it should apply in this case. I'm pretty much in the same situation, PC is 4 years old but I've kept it in as tip top condition as possible. All I do is surf, music, movies, and download and it performs them just fine. Does it perform all these duties as fast as a new PC? Hells no but by no means am I clicking on things and having to wait a couple seconds either so I've elected to keep it.

I think i'll just keep it. Since i really don't do much with my pc and i try to keep it clean all the time, there no point. Plus i don't have 300 to spend right now. I guess i never like gaming on a pc. The was made to be a gaming machine 7 year ago and the only game i played on it was quake and some other shooting games. Will probably just go buy myself a new ps3 game instead haha.

I think i spent quite a bit on this pc back in the day. I guess i got it's worth :P
