METRO VANCOUVER — The neighbourhood where a six-year-old Surrey girl was sexually assaulted Friday is frequented by prostitutes and shady characters, says a father of four who lives nearby.

“We’ve seen a variety of things going on here,” Cliff Jewell said today, shortly after the RCMP issued a public warning about the assault. “The people that do the shady stuff tend to come to this area.”

In a news release this morning, police said the girl was walking with her older brother and his friend in the 13900 block of 62nd Avenue when a man in his late 20s or early 30s threatened them with a knife and ordered them into a treed area. He told the boys to stay in one spot while he took the girl to another area, sexually assaulted her and fled.

Although the assault happened Friday evening, police weren’t called until Saturday afternoon.

Since hearing of the assault, Jewell said he’s been keeping a close eye on his kids, who range from 12 to 17 - even driving them to the bus stop down the block.

He said he was surprised by the attack because he thought there would be safety in numbers.

Jewell said he sees sex-trade workers several times a week and had to chase one away when he found her outside his home.

“Unfortunately because we’re a bit secluded some of the local ladies will bring the gentlemen to do what they do.”

There aren’t many houses on the block and they are separated by bushes and trees.

Jewell said he often sees people hanging around the bushes, including some “older, rougher fellows.” But he added that he didn’t see or hear anything unusual Friday.

Police said the suspect is a darker-skinned male, possibly Hispanic, Asian or South Asian, between 175 cm to 177 cm tall, with black crew-cut hair and a slight accent.

He was wearing a short-sleeved shirt that appeared to be blue and blue or black pants.

Police said they hope to speak with the victim and draw a composite sketch of the perpetrator.

Police are asking anyone with information to call RCMP in Surrey at 604-599-0502, 911 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

OMFG RAGE!!!!!! The brother shouldn't have left her though - that's cowardly. He shoulda sent his friend to get help while he stayed back to help his sister.
