Actually I've noticed the stares when I've gone to the island. I actually feel every uneasy when I do travel to the island, the island has a very weird vibe.

Seriously? What kind of ethnic background do you have? And what part of the island do you go to? I could see you getting the hillbilly stare in Zeballos or something, but most of the rest of the island is fairly diverse.

And that wasn't much of a fight to watch, but pretty typical of what you'll see on the street. Not everyone is the GSP type. As much as that black guy could have done more, for a guy who may have no or little experience with fighting, he did the right thing by keeping all three opponents in front of him, and not getting sucked in right away. As much as it's fun to trash idiots, his better bet would have been to make his way to an open business and even the numbers out.

I think the bigger point here is these 3 idiots could easily have chosen a smaller asian guy, or an older black guy and beat the crap out of them, these guys just happened to mess with a guy who was big enough to hold his own.

But seriously, its not uncommon to see people screaming slurs at minorities (Asians, Natives, Indians, etc) and a few years ago there was a bunch of swastikas being painted all over town. When Courtenay got it's first pho restaurant I remember hearing the gossip about "them Chinese going to the SPCA on a daily basis" and other assorted bullshit. There was also one black member of the RCMP who I personally witnessed having racial slurs thrown at him after the club closed out and he was taking someone away for fighting.

Its not surprising theres no synagogues, gudwaras, or buddhist temples in Courtenay. Its also not surprising that the Comox Valley doesn't see an influx of immigrants.


Anyone who tells you the Comox Valley/Courtenay area isn't a shithole is deluding themselves. This is just one time the shit boiled over the top and made it to the public

Once, many years ago, I was chilling with two other friends on NY's Eve outside the Pan Pacific hotel in downtown just talking and looking at the view. Suddenly, this huge brawl spilled out into the driveway right at the main doors.
I saw Chinese guys, White guys, and Brown guys fighting, and right off the bat I was like, huh! who's on who's side?
Then I realized it was a group of white/chinese/brown guys vs another group of white/chinese/brown guys.

It was the most beautiful thing I'd seen in a long time!

I'm EI and I wouldn't really call it a "racist" vibe but you do get that extra look by some older people like you're about to cause trouble maybe because they know you're from the mainland.

Zeballos isn't the only racist place on the Island. In fact, outside of Nanaimo and Victoria its fairly commonplace. I'm surprised this hasn't been videotaped more.
