I remember going to a pub in Campbell River once with a friend who was from there, and she's "scene/alt" I guess. Shocked the hell out of me some of the looks she got. Not that far of a drive from my town.
Anyone that's mid/north island knows there's racist rednecks in the comox valley. Glad I haven't had to deal with them much, though I have some friends there and used to always be through to Black Creek to drag race and autocross.
Pisses me off when I see a pickup sporting a big confederate flag.
I'm surprised the amount of coverage this one instance got.

CTV interviewed one of the attackers at his home today. He sayshe has to move ut of his house because of safety concerns for him and his family. It was pretty funny. Someone post it up if u can

the guy attacked back and should be charged too. he could have walked away after he got knocked down, instead he kept following the 3 guys and attacked them back as they got into their truck....

it was purely self-defense... the last part where he was following them to their truck should be done to try and scare them off a bit.. so they don't come back after him afterwards and shows that the victim wasn't scared...
but yeah, the fact that the victim actually didn't do anything to them makes me wonder why you think he should be charged...
what are you going to charge him with?... being beaten in public? and self defense?

They interviewed the suspects on Global; one guy did all the talking went by the name of "Jason or John" and said they were not racist and were not white supremacist. He said they started calling the victim names to piss him off because he had pissed them off. These guys aren't too bright; you never do interviews without a lawyer or do interviews when have pending charges against you.

The three made their first court appearances Thursday in Courtenay, about 220 kilometres north of Victoria, in connection with a July 3 attack on Jay Phillips, 38.
The men ? David Samuel White, 19, Adam David Huber, 24, and Robert William Rodgers, 25 ? told CBC News following the appearance that they believe the incident has been blown out of proportion and that they are now feeling threatened.
They provided no details of any threats.
Phillips, who is black, was punched and kicked in a fast-food restaurant parking lot in the Vancouver Island city.
A video of the brawl appeared on YouTube within days. It is not known who shot the video and posted it to the website.
Each of the men was released on his own recognizance after charges were laid earlier this month, and they won't enter pleas until their next appearance, on Aug. 20.
Phillips, who suffered cuts and bruised ribs, alleged the men shouted racial epithets and threatened him and his family with violence during the fight.
RCMP Const. Tammy Douglas said there are indications the attack was racially motivated and the Mounties have asked their hate crime team to look into it.
It is, however, being treated as an isolated incident and will not be labelled a hate crime until all the evidence is in, Douglas said.
