i was expecting a large explosion after the tanker collided, glad it didn't happen.

Eatman 07-09-2009 05:27 PM

skip to 1:10 of the video if you don't want to wait.

why skip? i thought it was interesting to see the weather in the background rapidly deteriorate

slammer111 07-09-2009 06:05 PM

Amazingly the camera didn't get destroyed by a flying piece of debris. WOW.

That would have been epic

Didnt look like anything was wrong until all the cars fell over...

you 07-09-2009 08:15 PM

that was gay i actually thought the train would fly up in the air

JHuJHu 07-09-2009 09:05 PM

^ LOL i was totally expecting that too. Like it would get caught in the tornado and spin the train round and round.

124Y 07-09-2009 09:33 PM

^Great minds think alike!

What happened is that as soon as the air brakes (from car to car) were separated by the train derailing, the train entered what is known as emergency. Emergency is air brakes, on full.

Because of the lighter mass of the engine and cars up front, it stops right away, the rest of the train has a much greater mass and plowed on through even with full brakes. Lucky that it was a light tap and not worse.

That is an old video... happened on the Harvard sub, Illinois in January 2008. Google 'Tornado derailment harvard sub -video' if you want some pictures and information about it.

Uhh... I wouldn't call 200 tons "light" in any context. The first 5 or 7 cars that toppled over were apparently filled with car parts... perhaps somewhat lighter than the tanker, but not by much. I think the problem was the tornado knocked them off the rails first (which judging by the sound of the emergency brake application, the breaking of the trainline was what caused it... not the engineer dumping it...)

The issue is the tank car is sliding... the wheels aren't actually on the rails anymore, and therefore there are no brakes with which to stop.

Anxious moments when the tanker car was coming up... and even though it looks like it's travelling so slowly, that thing ain't stopping! It's got a hell of a lot of momentum to keep driving it forward...

I never said the engineer dumped his air. I'm stipulating that air was lost during the derailment when the hoses separated. By lighter mass, I meant the tanker and all of the cars behind it.

thats it?

shenmecar 07-10-2009 05:04 PM
