What weird habits does your pet do?

Titan still barks like a puppy, ppl hear the barking or yelping and expect to see a little dog only to come to face with a not so little dog!

He also loves nudging his wet cold nose under ur arm to get attention. if that doesnt get ur attention, he will whine, growl, speak, and stomp his feet until you acknowledge him.

he sits funny, with his legs hanging out to the side, he also likes putting both his front paws up thus litterally sitting on his ass...

He also doesnt like walking without the leash, you can put the leash on him, and he will walk by himself, but without the leash, he will stand there waiting, like something is missing.

He still does not get the concept of throw and fetch. he will fetch it but he wont bring it back to you, he will play keep away, and even drop the ball every so often to taunt you. we even tried the 2 ball method, so he drops 1 ball and goes chasing after the 2nd one but i swear he has ADD, because as soon as he sees the 2nd ball, he does a :eek1:, drops the ball in place, and is totally fixated on the 2nd ball.

He is a socialite, he must visits all the neighboring dogs, sometimes he gets out from the yard and if so, you can find him playing or chatting it up with one of his friends down the street. sad thing, his walking buddy, an old chow, passed away a few weeks ago. so he still goes to the corner or to knights house and waits for him. can understand what the owner is going thru, we went thru it when Hemingway passed away.

But the weird thing about this dog... he hates eating alone. he will wake up up, drag you with him over to his food bowl, make you stay there and watch him eat. if you leave, he will drag u back, until he is finished, you cant leave! so we moved his dog dish closer to a tv now.

^^ its quirks like this that make every dog unique huh.

mine german shepherd still does the puppy sit with his back leg to the side too.

also still pees like a girl

because i like to wear wife beaters around the house, he likes to lick my armpit or stick his wet nose in my armpit to get my attention and my god does it get my attention... its like a wet willy:haha:

like to fart in the room and than demands to be let out

like to stick his nose in inappropriate places when my girl friends come for visit.

itchy all the time and makes a funny face when he scratches. sometimes at night it such a big habit for him but he is too tire to actually scratch he would tap his backleg like a bunny.

nothing like coming home after a hard day and see the 105lb wagging furry bundle of joy just so happy to see u no matter wat happened.

My rotti/pitbull/mastiff cross goes up on just his hind legs and will actually howl at the moon. I think it's pretty awesome.

InvisibleSoul 07-13-2009 04:10 PM

My chihuahua likes to try hiding her prized food items around our apartment... she'll try to dig a hole in blankets, the carpet, the bed, etc... then put the item there, and then try to bury it by nudging nonexistent dirt with her nose into the nonexistent hole... LoL

It's so cute... and it's especially endearing because we know she's not hiding it from US... because sometimes WE are her hiding spot! LoL. Like if we're lying on the couch, she'll put the food item beside our arm, and then try nudging it under our arm to hide it.

She's just doing it because it's just natural instinct that she was born with to hide her valuable food items for later.

^does she remember where she hides it?

hehe i like this thread

Fafine 07-14-2009 05:45 PM

my maltese pepper, like to hide her toys but he has a fucked up hiding spot, basically he drops it behind the couch and theres no way for him to get to it other than one of us getting it for him. he also loves to cuddle in bed with you. so when he jumps into the bed he'll get pull the covers over himself and just sleeps. if theres no one there he'll still crawl underneath some blankets and make a dog bed for himself.

My cat loves to give face washes, licks and nips your nose to say please let me down. She also plays fetch. Oh, and will pop out of a box to attack a stick. Never gets old. She is also longcat.

My dog, off the top of my head right now...

He sneezes every morning when he wakes up
When I go down the stairs he bites my toes
He barks whenever anyone hugs
He "blitzes" after every bath (basically runs around the house at full speed and growling at the same time)
My dog also refuse to play fetch. He prefers you to chase him instead :p

one of my dogs likes to butt surf. its pretty gross. he rubs his ass against my carpet and pulls himself forward with his paws

LemonH2O 07-15-2009 12:13 PM

Our almost 2 year old yellow lab retriever Calli

- loves loves loves rubbing her entire body (face to tail) against the couches as she walks by them
- walks through head first and tucks herself between your knees to have her ass rubbed
- wags not only her tail, but her ENTIRE 80 some odd pound body when we come home
- folds or tucks her paw underneath her body when she sleeps
- twirls in circles and whines when we grab her leash and collar
- literally takes her treat from our hand and runs away with it, like we would steal it back from her
- does not fetch...at all, no ball, no stick, no frisbee
- does not swim, she's scared once the water reaches her stomach, she walks back up the beach
- does not bark....EVER

Yeah, she does... I think it's something their born with as well, to remember where to find all of the things she hides. Sometimes we'll see her chewing something that we hadn't seen in a long time...

Now that you mention it, our dog used to do this when she was younger... but I haven't observed her doing it in quite some time now, so I would have to assume she doesn't do it anymore... but yeah, I think this is a fairly common way for dogs to wipe their butts. :p

!SG 07-15-2009 08:35 PM

i heard its some spreading the scent via the ass gland or something, i now some dogs do that especially after a bath where uve washed threir bum.

Nvasion 07-15-2009 09:02 PM

my pekingnese would always steal our slippers when he sees us coming into the kitchen. he also hates it when you ask if you can pick him up and he will bite you... but if you just pick him up without asking he wont get mad. Another thing he does is when its dinner time he wont eat untill you feed him... if you dont feed him he will eat once a day. When we take him for a walk and we go by a tennis court my dog will sit there and watch people play tennis.

in winter my weiner dog would wrap itself around the blanket and when i go to the washroom in the middle of the night i wouldnt be able to see it and freak out thinking that its missing. when she farts she runs away so fast but then a few seconds later will run back to that spot like she didnt do it. she would also do that butt surfing thing also, sometimes she does it for quite a distance and its hilarious!

god i love my dogs!

fliptuner 07-15-2009 11:50 PM

My rotty, barks at 4 legged animals, apes and black people on TV, like she's protecting the house from strangers.

If you reach down to my yorkie, she'll lie on her back to get a belly rub. Unless you have an excited voice, then a little pee might come out and she'll run around your feet. She also likes to lean one ear on the ground and run 5ft one way then lean the other down and run back. Her ears are clean and I pull the fine hair out of them, it's just a thing she does.

Lil Bastrd 07-16-2009 01:33 PM

The butt surfing can be a sign that the anal glands are too full or of worms, if a dog is doing this alot I would have the vet check the glands and would keep my eyes open for any worms in the stool that you clean up.

Weird things... hmm where to start. My Shih Tzu is now going through an extreme senior stage. He has decided that he has to beat up on Shrek a stuff toy that is bigger then him. After I put his hair up on his head he mashes his head into the ground whether it be carpet, cement, grass,or dirt.

any of ur dogs really really REALLY like the water?

we even bought a small kiddy pool for Titan, the barrel wasnt big enough for him, but damn i wish i had a camera, he sat in the barrel like if he was enjoying the hotsprings at some japanese onsen. all he needed was the towel on his head and he was set, hahaha. that would have been an awesome picture.

I have a cat that plays fetch. And both my cats love to play in the bath tub with the water running. I've never seen cats react with anything other than fear and disgust for water.

!SG 07-17-2009 11:04 PM

maybe ur cats have a dog mentality complex... they do play fetch and they do like water... you should try putting them on leashes and taking them out for walks.

Yeah right, they still freak out like cats when they are taken outside!

!SG 07-18-2009 09:22 AM

Hemingway once tried to sit on a corner table i moved outside temperarily, it was the funniest thing cuz he did it so sly like a cat would...

My cat used to play fetch too! And "soccer" (roll aluminum foil into a ball, rolll it on the ground and she knocks it side to side with her paws like she's dribbling).

regarding the butt surfing thing. dogs do it because their anal gland or what ever it's called is full and needs help poping it. supposedly dogs that run/jump around alot will eventually pop/burst that gland without knowing, but if some how that glad doesnt pop, it'll build up pressure and feel uncomfortable for the dog, thus they "butt surf" on carpets(usually) so the glads can be poped and released.

whats in those glads are some scented oil thats used to attract other dogs, so it's kind of nasty if ur dog is doing it in ur house. and dog groomers r suppose to give the dogs anus a squeeze when the dog's getting it's shower so that glad can be poped and released.

I would not have a groomer express the anal glands unless they have been shown how to do it properly. You can burst the anal glands, which releases the oils into the body. This is very painful and is an expensive surgery to fix.
Lots of good long walks will help the dog express the anal glands. Also a dog with firmer stool will naturally express as the stool will push on the glands.
