pretty obvious
if there's a guy in front of you, you make the decision AFTER he guns it. Not BEFORE.

i'll see him coming down the left turn lane quickly, so i'll probably stop.

edit: let me rephrase what i originally intended to say. by a clear intersection, i meant no cars coming down the left turn lane or waiting to turn left and no cars waiting to turn right to join my direction of travel.

edit 2: you can probably question what to do if the intersection's got left & right turners and tailgaters are riding your up behind you. what do you do then? nothing, go with your instrincts and pray. you can only avoid so much and sometimes, there's just no way of predicting how things will turn out.

anyhow, i hope the riders are ok.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to recall that you can't make a left turn on Granville St.

I hope the bikers are ok.

Your statement isn't entirely wrong nor is it entirely right. Yes, a modern day sportbike can out brake and out maneuver pretty much most cars on the road, given the right rider that is. Unfortunately majority of riders ride way past their skill set and they think they can handle a 600cc sportbike and that's when accidents happen. Fast moving bike and a slow moving car = disaster.

Going North (heading into DT) there is no left turns. Heading South, left turns are allowed.
