Surrey man dies after car collapses on top of him

http://www.bclocalnews.com/news/5180...itle=BC%20News

A man is dead after the car he was working underneath fell on him this morning.

The Mazda Millennia collapsed on the man when the jack holding it up gave way.

The accident happened in the 14600 block of 76 Avenue in Surrey.

Paramedics on scene were unable to save the man.

Neighbours said the man lives in a basement suite across the street from where the car was parked.

aparently he was only using a scissor jack.

you never go under a car being held by any jack!.. jacks raise and lower cars, they don't keep them up. that is what stands are for.

When I was 17, I had that happen to me. Luckily for me, the car was stock and the wheels were still on the car so I was able to slide out from underneath the car with only a minor scratch to my palm to protect my face from the tranny.

I think the same thing happened to someone else when the Ford Ranger they were working on slipped off of a cinder block and fell on his leg, trapping him for a few hours till someone passing by heard his screams for help.

A buddy and me had a similar scare last year. The car was from back east and covered in rust around the undercarriage. We had the jacks under the pivot point for the lower control arms (normal jack stand point for those cars) when the whole section gave way due to the amount of rust on it. The whole car dropped a good half foot while we were both underneath it before it caught good metal under the rust.

We both needed to change our underwear after that episode... :s

We now keep the jack under the lift point while still using the jack stand points, as well as throw both front tires under the car in case more than one fails.

thats why you put some extra crap under the car in case anything gives way. if i had a car crush me, id want it to be some 4000lb R35 GTR, not only because its a GTR, but it would be quick and instant

ive always been paranoid of this happening. i used jack then stands and block the wheels. and i keep the jack under the jacking point in case...
now that im in a shop, im super paranoid when lifting a vehicle.. and its a single poster, instead of a double post or drive on.... better safe than sorry... and dead.
