Air Traffic Controllers make $108,000 (US)???!!

I seen this on yahoo's career section, kind of surprised they make that much money. Do CDN air traffic controllers make the same money?

Quote:

Career: Air Traffic Controllers
Direct mid-air traffic and keep airports running safely and efficiently as an air traffic controller. These skilled workers come from a range of fields; some have flying or military experience, while others work directly out of school. Education is required for most air traffic controllers, who need to have work or college experience before enrolling in a dedicated controller training program.

BLS annual wage: $108,090
BLS = Bureau of Labor Statistics
Top paying states: Illinois, New Hampshire, Minnesota, California

I'm actually not too surprised.. With the levels of stress and pressure, few would consider this as an avid career unless the salary was decent. But that's still pretty amazing if one's able to keep content and calm while working the job. The only question is that who's going to be able to manage when something srs goes down.

snowball 08-02-2009 05:40 PM

i've watched a TLC documentary on air traffic controllers, the amount of stress they have to endure is insane, especially in high traffic airports

Yes, the job is very stressful and the shifts are killer but for $100,000+ it's not a bad job.

Those can be pretty big drawbacks, and most people aren't able, or willing, to shoulder the responsibility. At a large airport, you literally have the lives of thousands of people in your hands. Simultaneously.

I have NO problem with them getting paid this much. I do not want air traffic controlers making 40 k a year when im taking a flight.

urrh 08-02-2009 06:30 PM

i couldn't do the job.
my mind wanders too much and would cause too many deaths

SuperSlowSS 08-02-2009 06:35 PM

that doesn't sound like alot. one mistake... alot people will die.

Soundy 08-02-2009 06:39 PM

Go watch "Pushing Tin" if you haven't seen it... I remember reading when it came out that, despite being very "Hollywoodized", it gives a pretty good idea of the kind of pressure these guys work under.

And if nothing else, it's worth it for a young, nubile Angelina Jolie.

StylinRed 08-02-2009 07:08 PM

thats not a lot... seems about right

What website?

In YVR, you start at 80,000 as a newbie. Training and extra expense are all covered for. Obviously it goes up from there.

My friend's dad is an ATC at YVR. He's making some good money, however, I don't envy his job and responsibilities.

Every dot on the screen is 200+ lives.

They deserve way over 80 or 100k for what they do.

3seriesBeeM 08-02-2009 09:11 PM

I am pretty sure it was named as the worlds most stressful job. i dont even think they work 8 hour days

Darb 2k 08-02-2009 09:25 PM

Actually my father is an ATC. Now Medicine Hat AB does not get anywhere close to the number of movements that YVR does, but there are other factors that determine how stressful it can be,

Runway Configuration
Local Noise Abatement
Terrain(Mountains)

Any interested in pursuing this career should know that starting out can be hard. The schooling is demanding, you are required to pay for yourself to go to school as well as during the time you are in school. Also look forward to moving anywhere in Canada where the position requires you.

I don't understand how this doesn't apply to anything above post secondary.

No PhD student really pays tuition. As far as I know, all PhD student qualify for "funding". Where I went, they get 10k for jsut for going, and that's on top of being a TA and RA.

But any professional program (law school, mba, doctors, etc) pretty much requires you to pay your own way. I would assume ATC is one of them, but I don't even know where someone goes to learn to be an ATC.

slammer111 08-03-2009 12:47 AM

My sister and her friend both went to ATC training in Cornwall, Ontario. Both passed all the aptitude tests, but cracked under the pressure during the on-site training phase. My sister worked at Hamilton and her friend at Trenton, which aren't even crazy busy.

As people are saying above, 1 mistake and you could be responsible for 500+ deaths if 2 jetliners collide. Even if it's not your fault, that's one helluva burden on your conscience forever.

VFR (Visual Flight Rules) where you sit on top of the tower pays less than IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) where you're staring at radar screens in a dark room in the basement.

shenmecar 08-03-2009 11:15 AM

This job can really fuck up a person for life.

Meowjin 08-03-2009 01:22 PM

I don't see the problem.

JSALES 08-03-2009 01:29 PM

that doesn't sound like much, they should get paid more

Dragon-88 08-03-2009 01:36 PM

Microsoft Flight Simulator X let you be ATC in multiplayer... Those guys take it seriously... One time I had a "engine failure" on my plane, and ATC sent me a military escort..:P... I wonder if they ever practice on there.
