I seen this on yahoo's career section, kind of surprised they make that much money. Do CDN air traffic controllers make the same money? Quote:

I'm actually not too surprised.. With the levels of stress and pressure, few would consider this as an avid career unless the salary was decent. But that's still pretty amazing if one's able to keep content and calm while working the job. The only question is that who's going to be able to manage when something srs goes down.

i've watched a TLC documentary on air traffic controllers, the amount of stress they have to endure is insane, especially in high traffic airports

Yes, the job is very stressful and the shifts are killer but for $100,000+ it's not a bad job.

I have NO problem with them getting paid this much. I do not want air traffic controlers making 40 k a year when im taking a flight.

Go watch "Pushing Tin" if you haven't seen it... I remember reading when it came out that, despite being very "Hollywoodized", it gives a pretty good idea of the kind of pressure these guys work under.
And if nothing else, it's worth it for a young, nubile Angelina Jolie.

In YVR, you start at 80,000 as a newbie. Training and extra expense are all covered for. Obviously it goes up from there.

Actually my father is an ATC. Now Medicine Hat AB does not get anywhere close to the number of movements that YVR does, but there are other factors that determine how stressful it can be,
Runway Configuration
Local Noise Abatement
Terrain(Mountains)
Any interested in pursuing this career should know that starting out can be hard. The schooling is demanding, you are required to pay for yourself to go to school as well as during the time you are in school. Also look forward to moving anywhere in Canada where the position requires you.

But any professional program (law school, mba, doctors, etc) pretty much requires you to pay your own way. I would assume ATC is one of them, but I don't even know where someone goes to learn to be an ATC.

My sister and her friend both went to ATC training in Cornwall, Ontario. Both passed all the aptitude tests, but cracked under the pressure during the on-site training phase. My sister worked at Hamilton and her friend at Trenton, which aren't even crazy busy.
As people are saying above, 1 mistake and you could be responsible for 500+ deaths if 2 jetliners collide. Even if it's not your fault, that's one helluva burden on your conscience forever.
VFR (Visual Flight Rules) where you sit on top of the tower pays less than IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) where you're staring at radar screens in a dark room in the basement.

Microsoft Flight Simulator X let you be ATC in multiplayer... Those guys take it seriously... One time I had a "engine failure" on my plane, and ATC sent me a military escort..:P... I wonder if they ever practice on there.
