the black dome..

ReD-DrAgOn 08-03-2009 07:57 PM

I might be wrong, but I think its heat detecting. I was in crescent park and a ghost truck rolled in and I asked the officer what the dome was and she said heat/infrared. I cant remember which.

FLIR

Forward Looking Infra Red (basically night vision)

skidmark 08-03-2009 08:55 PM

Could also be ALPRS (Automatic License Plate Recognition)

Raid3n 08-03-2009 08:56 PM

my money is on ALPRS

Soundy 08-03-2009 09:24 PM

I think it's AAAAA (American Association Against Acronym Abuse).

ws6ta 08-03-2009 09:29 PM

probably a license plate reader... random off topic question: why don't cops in canada have camera's like the cops in the us do?

JSALES 08-03-2009 11:39 PM

That is the right answer. Used to detect people in fields, grow ops, etc.

We put FLIR cameras in for a security-monitoring system a couple years ago... pretty cool stuff! Can't even see a difference between day and night:

It is a FLIR, several detachments use vehicle mounted ones as well as hand helds.

Maybe I bring our hand held to the Summer meet.

Soundy 08-04-2009 09:05 PM

oooo handheld, nice! We put in a pair of SR19s (list about $10k each) and a 180-degree WideEye (lists around $25k) on top of 50' tower :D I don't even wanna think about what a handheld costs - given the installation precautions we had on the ones we installed, the handheld must be made pretty much bullet-proof.

what the hell do you do and why does it sound like it could be a lot of fun?

slammer111 08-05-2009 02:37 PM

^ It's fun until you start putting in your 200th system. ;) If this is your thing, go into construction/building technologies. Soundy would most likely be in the Security division of such a company.
