I might be wrong, but I think its heat detecting. I was in crescent park and a ghost truck rolled in and I asked the officer what the dome was and she said heat/infrared. I cant remember which.

That is the right answer. Used to detect people in fields, grow ops, etc.

We put FLIR cameras in for a security-monitoring system a couple years ago... pretty cool stuff! Can't even see a difference between day and night:

It is a FLIR, several detachments use vehicle mounted ones as well as hand helds.

Maybe I bring our hand held to the Summer meet.

oooo handheld, nice! We put in a pair of SR19s (list about $10k each) and a 180-degree WideEye (lists around $25k) on top of 50' tower I don't even wanna think about what a handheld costs - given the installation precautions we had on the ones we installed, the handheld must be made pretty much bullet-proof.

^ It's fun until you start putting in your 200th system. If this is your thing, go into construction/building technologies. Soundy would most likely be in the Security division of such a company.
