Logitech z5500 to tv?

How would it be possible to get 5.1 from your tv/dvd player to the logitech z5500's? i know it comes with 3 3.5mm analog plugs for left, right, center, and there is a splitter that will combine all 3 into 2 channel stereo making 6 speakers play stereo so only left and right, would an optical cable give full 5.1 if connected to a dvd player/tv?
