Need wireless router advice

I need to purchase a wireless router. Every router seems to have an overwhelming number of reviews indicating that it's a terrible choice. So I'm looking for some straightforward advice.

My needs:
-Small townhome (800 sq/ft). The router will be on the bottom floor and the computers will be on the top floor. I don't think range will be a big concern.
-USB - I want to plug in my usb backup drive (at the very least) to access it wirelessly. Therefore, it needs to be an N-router with great transfer speeds.
-Stable.

grab an N router with some sort of speed booster. And i recomend Linksys, for two reasons:

1) Dlink has failed me 2x ( DI 604 , and some wired version )
2) Linksys has good customer support if you between 9 - 7ish PST.

I have the exact same setup as you ( router bottom floor , comps top floor ) and the range is shit 1/3 computers. the computer that is directly on top the of the router will have awesome signal, while the one thats only 10ft away will have shitty signal and speed.

also if you need to buy wireless adapters, buy the PCMCIA(sp?) - the ones that u stick directly into the comp. the usb ones are crap, regardless of brand.

Linksys and D-Link have equally shitty software for accessing an external drive through the USB port on the router (maybe not equally, but they both have shitty software).

The Apple Airport Extreme worked well for me in this regard, although it was annoying as hell to use with Windows thanks to a 3-course meal consisting of Apple's bullshit followed by Apple's bullshit and, to finish it off, some more of Apple's bullshit.

Maybe someone else can suggest a different brand that doesn't suck in this regard.

This is directly in line with all of the reviews I have been reading. Does anyone else have a solid recommendation?
