Trading in a car I've been wanting to trade in my 02 TL (no accidents, 90000km) for a 02 A4 of pretty much the same history, and finally had the time to do it. Went to a used car dealership on Kingsway. When I got there, the guy offered me $6000, I was like, wtf.. I was hoping to trade it in with $1000 on top seeing as how these cars are roughly the same value and the guy made some dumb remark and I was cheesed and left. So what I want to ask is, is that the kind of offers I should expect when trading in my car? Should I try to sell my car privately instead? Or should I try and bargain for a better trade price? Sorry if I sound kind of dumb, first time trade-in/selling experience. |

Sell the car private then buy the used Audi, you only lose money going to dealerships. |
Is it quattro? |
Dealers will always lowball you so they can sell your car and make a profit. They don't care if the two cars are similar in value. Ya, sell your TL privately~ OT: Is 2002 TL that bad on gas? |
MB dealer is willing to give me $3,000 for my 1999 A4 2.8 w/ 90,000km. It's not only Kingsway dealerships that lowballs you, all dealerships do. |

try using this to get an approximate trade in value (click the link to the canadian black book on the page below): https://ford.ca/app/fo/en/shopping_t...elYearId=10774 |
i'd stay away from an 02 if I were you.. the AWP engine on the 04+ is much much better.. i'd save a few more $ to get that instead... |
Let's say the 2 cars are worth the exact same amount. The only way the dealer would trade straight across is if the Audi is fucked and he has a better chance of moving yours. Sell you car privately and you'll get maximum dollar. If you find your next car privately, you'll also save on the tax. |
...and stay away from those dealerships. I can't believe RS members are still going there. Aren't there enough threads on the subject already? |
MORAL: STAY AWAY FROM KINGSWAY |
Also, watch out for those shady dealers in New West as well. |
Thank you for your insights fellow members. I've decided to take all of your advices into consideration and have come to the conclusion that I will A, stay away from those dealers and B, opt for an 04 as too_slow mentioned (thanks again). Well as for the fuel efficiency thing.... although I don't know the actual numbers, I just figured that my 3.2L V6 TL burns more gas then the 1.8T 4cyl. turbo. Anybody know the actual numbers for km/l on the 2 cars? |
I'll offer you 7k :) but....non of those kingsway used car dealership...stay far far away |
lol when i read kingsway dealership, and then read that he offered $1,000 on top i was expecting it to be a joke thread haha! but yea, when you trade in vehicles towards another vehicle its not like trading hockey cards, you arent really 'trading' the car in. you are just selling the dealership the car at the lowest possible figure he will give you. best to go private on both transactions if you can. |
STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM AUDI 02 TL > 02 A4 my friend its bigger, more powerful. as long as you take care your tranny with regular fluid change you should be fine numerous....numerous friends had A4/S4 of that year...heard too many small problems here and there. they all got so tired of the car and sold it later on so plz...stay the fuck away and $6g for 02 TL with only 80,000km? are you kidding me sell it privately dude, dont let the stealership lowball u |

...He already said he was gonna get an '04 instead, which is MUCH better... |
u should be able to get about 9k on trdae in top book is 10k, but nobody pays top book unless you are buying a car with high markup |
This takes you to the black book website many dealers use to determine trade in, same as on the ford site posted above: http://www.gm.ca/gm/english/services...raise-trade-in My car (2003 C230) is worth ~$10K private sale, and only $5.4K on trade. |
on the very top he states 02 A4 tho |
