911fanatic vs MkII Jetta

A friend called and said his sister was moving away but wanted her MkII Jetta polished before she left. He said it was a little faded. A pre polish inspection confirmed that. Luckily, I was instucted that the car need not be perfect. Only that it was for the most part, red again. I had one day to do the car. Day one (4-7pm) got the hood, roof and trunklid done. I called my trusty sidekick Terence and he agreed to pop by the next morning to help out. As we had an entire table of sample polishes and pads we had not had a chance to play with yet, we went to town.
One of the suprises wax MARKV Mystique, a one step polish. It worked very well on this car in conjunction with an Orange CCS pad. After polishing, all the pads went into a 5 gallon pail of water with Tropicare Citrus Wash in it. A day later, all the pads were rinsed under warm water and came out mint! Great product. All trim was done with Poorboys Trim Restorer and tires got DG Tire Dressing

The trunklid was polished with Gloss its Extreme Cut Plus beta on an Orange CCS pad and cleaned up with Menz Power Finish on Green.

PS hood got the same as the trunklid but the GI Extreme Cut Plus was leaving hologramming ( not abnormal for a heavy polish ) so I switched to Scholl S03+ for the DS and no hologramming. Power finish helped give it a little more depth.

After polishing we gave the car a coat of PB EX w/carnauba. I have to say, for an inexpensive product, it went on and off easy and made the red look really good. I used it on a new black Silverado the same day and it gave that truck a lot of depth and wetness.

holy shit that's amazing! how much did you charge?

911fanatic 08-24-2009 09:17 PM

Bill was $300 for the day and the client washed the car before bringing it in so I could spend the entire day polishing.

!Yaminashi 08-24-2009 09:34 PM

WOW that was really faded. LOOK AT THE DIFFERENCE

!Aznboi128 08-24-2009 10:17 PM

ZOMG!

that's amazing

Faded paint is fun to work on.

Ken, I'm guessing like most reds, this is a single stage paint? Show us some shots of your pads!

Pads were nasty. You couldn't even tell they were orange. We got a couple of panels out of each pad before they were too clogged up to use. We went through around a dozen pads on this jetta. Even the wax applicator was red!

absolutely amazing

I remember the first time I did a red. Thought I had burned through the clearcoat haha.

sonick 08-25-2009 01:32 PM

Wow, nice comparison, but I'm curious how come somebody would spend $300 to get an old Jetta professionally detailed, unless it's super low mileage and mint?

ilvtofu 08-25-2009 04:55 PM

Well look at the diff? now it's not embarassing to drive nemore, so the person saves money not having to buy a new car :haha:

roastpuff 08-25-2009 05:55 PM

WOW. I don't have any other words for it... that is an incredible before/after comparison. Absolutely amazing work and money well spent...

I wish you were located on the Island, my swirly jet black BMW would love some of this top-notch pampering.

Really? Cool. It's a 2002 330ci. I'm going on a month long holiday next week, but maybe when I'm back if you're on the island sometime we can work something out.

There's a slogan for Armour All or some crap that goes, " Treat your car like you're going to sell it and you never will. "

I think that applies here.

Another excellent job, Ken!!!

Again, does it have a single stage paintjob? Cause I have a '71 Corolla that could use that same treatment. I've done a 3 stage Mother's on the hood but it only looks about 75% as shiny as you got the Dub.

Give me a call. After this summer I could use a road trip. Where on the island are you?

Yes it was single stage. Don't forget we were using rotary polishers and some very aggressive polishes to get to come back.

bcty 09-23-2009 01:57 PM

Ken if you come over here you better let me know. But im also located on the island if I can help anyone as well :)
