BC Ferries Sinking Settlement

News is a couple weeks old but I just found now. Wow I can't believe the daughters only settled for $200,000 for the loss of their father in the Ferry sinking in March 2006, on top of that they had high profile lawyer Peter Richie.

wow.

in america is would be millions and the ferries would be bankrupt after that suit.

pandalove 08-31-2009 12:52 AM

this would not have happened if that damn new sky train wasn't built

ImportPsycho 08-31-2009 01:19 AM

Two teenage girls whose father died.....

probably thought 200k was HUGE money....

MG1 08-31-2009 01:33 AM

200k is better than more money for lawyers and years of waiting and the possiblity of getting less overall later on.

I wonder if there was any insurance money on top of that.

murd0c 08-31-2009 01:53 AM

money can't buy your happyness or even forgiveness for what happed. The prob thought it was better to get it over with and put it beind them rather then going through courtfor years

"A breakdown of the agreement reveals that the girls each received $30,000 for loss of love, guidance and affection"

LOL thats brutal... a father's love is worth a little less than a CSX

lol, once again it has proven that human lives r disposable. No need to get all up in arms, it isnt exactly news that lives of normal folks r worth very little compared to rich ppl.

Assuming they only take 1 zone and are still high school students. ($1.75)

114285 times with $1.25 left for pop for 1 person. :D

Their case was scheduled to go to a jury trial earlier this year but their lawyer, Peter Ritchie, held a news conference and said it would be too expensive to get justice and announced that there had been an out-of-court settlement with B.C. Ferries.

Legal costs amounted to $22,976 and disbursements were $15,038.
jeezus... that's over $38k going to bloodsucking lawyers and the joke of a judicial system we have here...

slammer111 08-31-2009 01:17 PM

^ actually that sounds low. Most Personal Injury lawyers START at 30% commission. And actually it's a good thing too, because now the lawyer has a vested interest in getting the largest settlement possible for his/her client. Otherwise they wouldn't give a crap.

With that said, I can't believe the lawyer settled for $200k for a DEATH. A serious injury alone can usually result in $100k (before commission) alone.

Why shouldn't the lives of rich ppl be worth more than normal folk?

BC ferries may of played the your father wanted to die. Its been speculated that they may have wanted to go down with the ship, thus the daughters wouldn`t have received anything as it would have been suicide.

johny 08-31-2009 09:57 PM

from what I heard. they were sleeping in their car / camper on the car deck. on the northern ferrys you aren't allowed on the car deck durring sailing. only the upper decks. the crew helped everyone off the main decks. and probably neven even went down to the car deck. the car deck is locked the whole time so people can't go down.

so it was their breaking the ferry rules that got them killed.

Vansterdam 08-31-2009 10:19 PM

wow lawyers made way more

Rogue951 08-31-2009 11:59 PM

Anyone else notice BCFerries website got owned by a search engine? lol

if that true, they should've gotten $000000000 x infinity.00

i remember something about the parents not declared as being "dead", only "missing" for quite some time, which only delayed whatever compensation (eg. life insurance) that was available to the children :(

StylinRed 09-01-2009 08:49 AM

their lawyer didn't take much at all

but wow settled for $200k? jesus... they probably didnt want to go through with the case anymore and just settled on anything

dizzystar 09-02-2009 01:50 AM

wow, 200k is nothing......

parents arent even worth 1/6th of a house in this market anymore.. wait... forgot HST... 1/16th
