Importing Modified car from US

I'm about to purchase a car with aftermarket suspension and bumper from an autobroker in cali. How do i protect myself from not paying extra duty on these parts? How do i prove they came with the car at time of purchase?

you don't have to pay duty on them as long as they are installed.

however you might get into trouble with the safety inspection... make sure the DOT marks are on them.

It's not the responsibility of anyone at the border (USA or Canada) to determine what's safe and what isn't. That time comes when you do the provincial or federal RIV (if applicable) inspections. I wouldn't worry too much about those mods. The inspectors are more concerned about all your lights working etc...

yeah. i'm not too worried about anything related to RIV or safety right now. I'm just worried that they will lock me up in a room for the whole day and accuse me of smuggling parts. haha.

nope. they will not come out and look at the car unless the value on your bill of sale is too low. ( way below the book value) . Because they will want to see if there are any damages or whatever.

The value of a car is unrelated to the modded parts. In the open market a factory kept car is worth a lot more than a modified car. Customs will not even care what you have on it as long as you have a bill of sales that they could tax on.

I brought a car in with Carbon fibre hood and Spoiler with no problem, so you are fine.
They only gave me trouble saying my reported price was way too low compared to similar cars they could find on the web, I simply told them "That is why I decided to buy it" and they just let me go after that :P

thanks for all the quick replies! I verified with Canada customs this morning and they said it wouldn't be a problem as well.

You would pay duty on the value they decide it's worth when you import it. Buy a $200 Teg, install $4000 in extras...pay duty now on a $4,200 car.

not if you have a bill of sales that back it up that you bought the car for $200. Customs can't stop you from getting a banging deal.
