Gr.12 math text book word problem.. i not knowing

k, ive been looking over this for the past 10 minutes and either ive smoked myself retarded or there is no way to determine the final outcome, the question is as follows:

"At Lunch time four friends, Anna, Pat, Petra, and Bonnie, are each eating a different type of fruit. The Fruits are an apple, a pear, a peach, and a banana. None of the girls is eating a type of fruit that begins with the same initial as her name, If Anna doesnt like pears, who is eating what?"

ive got it down to 2 certainties, but i dont see how you determine which girl is eating what fruit with the remaining 2?

turbomelon 09-01-2009 07:32 PM

could be one of those two cases type of answers? Or does it specify there's only one solution

Cuz obviously, like you said, either its

Case 1
Anna- Peach
Pat- Banana
Petra- Apple
Bonnie- Pear

or

Case 2
Anna- Peach
Pat- Apple
Petra- Banana
Bonnie- Pear

impactX 09-01-2009 07:32 PM

Anna - Peach
Bonnie - Pear
Pat - Apple
Petra (initial = PA? lol) - Banana

Sid Vicious 09-01-2009 07:37 PM

Anna - Peach
Pat Apple/banana
Petra -Banana/apple
Bonnie Pear

Pat and Petra are interchangable I think. but anna and bonnie are correct always

Hondaracer 09-01-2009 07:48 PM

yea, in the back of the book there is only one definitive answer, but the 2 have to be interchangeable there isnt enough info otherwise correct?

:/

Lomac 09-01-2009 08:06 PM

Just because Anna doesn't like pears it doesn't mean she isn't eating it. ;)

penner2k 09-01-2009 08:09 PM

Yah there are 2 answers.. lol
Someone didnt think that one through..

penner2k 09-01-2009 08:12 PM

This would be a better question

"At Lunch time four friends, Anna, Pat, Petra, and Bonnie, are each eating a different type of fruit. The Fruits are an apple, a pear, a peach, and a banana. None of the girls is eating a type of fruit that begins with the same initial as her name. Petra is pregnant and doesn't know who the father is. If Anna doesnt like pears, who is eating what?"

You get the following from what is written:
Anna can't eat apple.
Bonnie can't eat banana.
Pat can't eat pear or peach.
Petra can't eat pear or peach.
Anna can't eat pear.

From that, you can deduce the following:
Anna can eat banana or peach.
Bonnie can eat apple, pear, or peach.
Pat can eat apple or banana.
Petra can eat apple or banana.

First conclusion:
Bonnie is the only person that can eat pear.

Left with:
Anna can eat banana or peach.
Pat can eat apple or banana.
Petra can eat apple or banana.

Second conclusion:
Anna is the only person that can eat peach.

Left with:
Pat can eat apple or banana.
Petra can eat apple or banana.

Yeah, you're right. I can't see how you can determine between Pat and Petra who is eating the apple and who is eating the banana.

if those are all the constraints, then there's 2 answers as discussed. The book wants to save ink.

i hate misprints in math textbooks, they fck you over so bad

MWR34 09-02-2009 01:59 AM

isn't it obvious?

"At Lunch time four friends, Anna, Pat, Petra, and Bonnie, are each eating a different type of fruit. The Fruits are an apple, a pear, a peach, and a banana. None of the girls is eating a type of fruit that begins with the same initial as her name, If Anna doesnt like pears, who is eating what?"

Anna Eats Banana
Petra Eats Apple
Bonnie Eats Peach
Pat Eats Pear

These names listed above are 4 friends. but 3 are fucking Girls. Pat is a fuckin Guy. so the rules of who eats what doesnt apply to Pat the guy.

I win, I hope.. 3am post FTW?...........thank me if Im right.

silk 09-02-2009 03:57 AM

i do know one thing... u are not asian lol

Orion 09-02-2009 09:06 AM

most people has already mentioned it but I'll dissect it down

Anna (2 Choices - Peach or Banana)
Pat (2 Choices - Banana or Apple)
Petra (2 Choices - Banana or Apple)
Bonnie (3 Choices - Peach, Apple or Pear)

Since Bonnie has the most choices you solve for the other three first. There's actually a formula for doing but its simple. Just look at it (its like playing Sudoku). Pet and Petra only has two choices each that means those two fruits must belong to them. That eliminates the banana from Anna which means she's eat Peach that leaves only a Pear for Bonnie so your answer is simply:

Anna - Peach
Pat - Banana or Apple
Petra - Banana or Apple
Bonnie - Pear

Pat and Petra is the inter exchangeable ones.

damn that sounds about right. But Pat can also be a girl's name. Short for Patricia.
ie. Pat Benatar

but your reasoning makes sense if Pat is indeed a dude

pandalove 09-02-2009 11:16 AM

we need some of BNR34's graphs to figure this one out

skyxx 09-02-2009 11:27 AM

Here's another skill testing question that will need BNR34's graphs.

How many people does it take to solve one simple grade 12 math question?

ajax 09-02-2009 11:38 AM

Pat is putting his banana in Anna's peach while the other two eat a pear and apple and watch.
