Keep in mind that the new i5 and i7 8xx use a different socket than the i7 9xx. I didn't even know this because I am still waiting for my package to arrive. At first I thought it was stupid, but it makes sense that they want to seperate the ultra hardcore stuff from mainstream. They tried that with X38 and x48 with the Extreme Edition processors, but that didn't work at all. Motherboard manufacturers just ran the P35 and P45 at the exact same timings as the Extreme chipsets, which kind of screwed Intel up.

On the bright side, P55 motherboards will be a lot cheaper than the X58's that are out there now. They should be priced "normally"

you're cheering on a cpu

Dude, if you have any idea on the time I saved going through almost 800GB worth of HD video by moving to i7 from my iMac 2.4Ghz, you would be cheering too.

yeah i always wondered, what does the new i5 i7 mean? i was pissed when i heard about it cuz i thought they were just killing what i have off. but i guess not?

im not gonna have to go get a new mobo when i wanna upgrade cpu's right!?

SkinnyPupp 09-03-2009 12:50 AM

They will continue to make i7 9xx, and they will probably always be faster than 8xx and i5

From what I've read, intel is ending the Pentium/Celeron once for all and making its way for i7/i5/i3 with i7 9xx being fastest (tri-channel DDR3, X58... etc), i7 8xx/i5 being mainstream (dual channel DDR3, P55) and i3 as the budget (think it as the old Celeron, just it's now called i3)

And we really need AMD to push something out fast... for intel to be pushing all the above classes with different CPU socket is just nuts

old school quad cores FTW!

Ill stick to my Dual Opteron 285's for a few more years.

AzNightmare 09-03-2009 05:28 PM

Try running multiple games at once.
Crysis maxed out is pretty intense though. At least it used to be... not sure what is the game they use for benchmarking now adays...

SkinnyPupp 09-03-2009 06:16 PM

AMD is coming out with a $100 quad core that is going to kill Intel's cheapest ($150) quad. Watch for it if you're in the market soon.

Ikkaku 09-03-2009 10:50 PM

awwwww fuck I just built my system too

phenom II 550 dual core unlocked to quad core :(

I'm still waiting on mine.
What's your build like?

Ikkaku 09-04-2009 11:28 AM

Phenom II 550 dual unlocked to quad
Gigabyte MA790XT
Antec 300 case
WD 1tb green
4gb patriot viper extreme DDR3 2x2GB
Antec earthwatt 500watt

just waiting for the gtx 260 to get cheaper, then I'll get one... for now I'm still using my old EN8500GT :lol

the quad cores seems stable, I did the balanced prime95 test for 6.5 hours without problems

That's very close to my list

# Coolermaster Storm Sniper Case
# Coolermaster Extreme Power Plus 500W PSU
# Gigabyte MA790XT-UD4P
# AMD Phenom X2 550 Black Edition
# XFX Radeon HD 4870 1GB
# 2qty – Patriot Extreme Performance Viper 4GB DDR3-1600
# 2qty – Western Digital 1TB Caviar Black SATA2 Drives
# Samsung SH-S223B/BEBE
# Xigmatek HDT-S1283 CPU Heatsink

Actually the Patriot RAM sticks were too high profile for my heatsink, so I switched it to some Mushkin HP3 DDR3-1600...

I think I kinda went overkill with this build, but hey, better than drinking money HAHA

Did you pull the BIOS firmware from Giga-byte's website?

Ikkaku 09-04-2009 11:56 PM

I think I just installed it preconfigured lol

my friend had a list of the steppings that had success for the quad unlocking, so we ended up going to 2 NCIX's to find the right one. The one with my stepping had a 3/3 success rate I believe. His was 7/7 before his unlocked succesfully

I am very curious about the 4870, my friends told me if I didn't want to save up for the GTX 260, I should just go for the 4870. The biggest problem is that I heard that card ran HOT because of it's raw power, and the fans got a bit noisy if the fans were turned up.

w00tgasm 09-05-2009 12:23 AM

I'll run some benches when I get it in.
I paid NCIX to assemble my PC since I wouldn't be able to use it if i built it anyways since I'm still waiting on an OS and new monitor LOL.

I'll run some benchmarks on the Videocard if you'd like and monitor the temps... But I don't think there are many games out there that'll make the card run HARD...

roastpuff 09-05-2009 01:39 PM

4870's no longer the top-tier card. It can be run hard by Crysis at high-resolutions with the AA/AF turned up for sure, and other games will tax it. That's why I skipped over the 4870 and went for the 4890 1GB during a NCIX surprise special.

I have the XFX 4890OC, and let me tell you that when that sucker spools up, it gets LOUD, hehe. I'm ok with it because I use headphones most of the time, but I might move to an aftermarket cooling solution that has quieter fans.

When doing Assassin's Creed, Fallout 3, etc, the card can sometimes get quite hot (~65c-75c) especially if the game isn't optimized very well (HL2 mods) but that's pretty normal operating temps considering how ungood my case ventilation is.

Skinny, when is this budget quad supposed to show up? I'm interested in upgrading my x2 7750BE to a quad for graphics/photo/video processing.

Just jumped on the $99 PCP&C Quad 750W PSU deal at NCIX too.

SkinnyPupp 09-09-2009 07:30 PM

They come out on Sept 16. (they will be $99 and $116 in the US)
