So I haven't really been utilizing my computer's full potential...

i have a corei7 920
6 gigs tri blahbalh ram
gtx 260 whatever.

running vista 64bit.

tell me, what the fuck can i do with this. i've had it since nov and i haven't really done anything crazy.

what would u do?

what crazy game that requires some crazy power can i run?
what about visuals or whatever... what new benchmark programs are there?

impactX 09-01-2009 09:02 PM

GTA4.

Doesn't matter, your computer didn't depreciate much at all because AMD sucks arse now and Intel hasn't been slashing the price on the I7.

jmvdesign 09-01-2009 09:19 PM

I love the i7's. I have one at home and had my boss get me one at work. We hooked up the i7 tower with our current render farm consisting of 4 quad core PC's for even more render power. Sometimes I can run and manage 5-6 3ds Max applications open and have it render multiple 300 DPI images (with the help of distributed rendering from the render farm) at the same time and it barely bogs down.

MikeyStyle 09-01-2009 09:29 PM

you can start folding if you have nothing else to do

EDawg 09-01-2009 10:10 PM

crysis

Levitron 09-01-2009 11:56 PM

Edit videos....I wish I had your computing power :( I need it for my videos and my 1st gen Pentium D dual core just doesn't cut it anymore.

asian_XL 09-02-2009 12:36 AM

ouch, after spending over $1800 on this system

underscore 09-02-2009 03:40 AM

yeah, editing 1080p videos out of my Canon 5DMarkII is really taxing my current AMD x2 7750 system. :( Even with 4GB RAM and Win7 64-bit.

The 21MP RAW files don't help either.

Eclypz 09-02-2009 04:56 PM

Run 3DMark Vantage and see how well you do compared to others?

SkinnyPupp 09-02-2009 06:05 PM

Play Crysis and Warhead. That's what I did when I upgraded to Radeon 4890 :lol

BTW, AMD has pretty much caught up to the Core i7 920 believe it or not. The Phenom II 965 is fucking fast.

Hehe 09-02-2009 06:28 PM

^

Yeah, like a year after 920 became available? And in certain raw processing power benchs, PII965 is *just* up to the 920. We will see when AMD bring us some six-core stuff, until then, i7 4evar~~... :D

Back to the topic, like other suggested, run some 3D games with resource hungry engines like Crysis, GTA4... etc

Or else, if you are into video/photo, try some video/photo editing with premiere/photoshop... you would be begging for even more power... :)

I have pretty much the same setup as u do with SSD in raid 0 for running apps and when I edit 1080P videos from my Xacti HD2000, I still wish for some more.. but anything i7 except the 920 is crazy expensive for my taste... for now, a 920@3.6 would do the trick.

SkinnyPupp 09-02-2009 06:35 PM

Enough with the fanboy bullshit. Regardless of when these products were released, I am talking about right now.

impactX 09-02-2009 06:55 PM

I dont care about when they came out... I care about the value more.

Right now, I don't feel like paying that much for the I7, so I will definitely look into the 965.

Did you do a review on the Phenom II 965 yet?

SkinnyPupp 09-02-2009 06:59 PM

I am just finishing up testing right now. I redid all my benchmarks, using Windows 7 x64.

Then next week comes Core i5 and i7 8xx

EDawg 09-02-2009 07:06 PM

wooo that means price drops!!!
i7 here i come!!

Sweet! I will wait for your review on this :D

asian_XL 09-02-2009 08:14 PM

Core i5 is equivlent to what?

compare to Q9450 with i5, which one is faster?

!LittleDragon 09-02-2009 08:26 PM

I've been in the same boat before. Many years ago, I built me a 3.4ghz HT, 4 gigs of ram, GeForce 6800 and 4 raptor 150's in a Raid5. Pretty skookum gaming machine back then right? Cept I did nothing but surf the internet and maintain my porn sites with it. Today, I still use the same machine cept I replaced the loud ass drive array with a single 500gb.

i5 is faster then a Q9550 and cheaper.... but not too much improvement in gaming performance

mostly video encoding shit

not when u overclock the 920 to like 3.8Ghz- 4.0Ghz which most 920 is capable of doing, but phenom II should be a pretty decent overclocker too
