Porsche: Volkswagen Board Votes to Cancel Porsche Cayenne and Panamera

Quote:

Porsche may have expanded out of the sports car segments over the last few years – first with the Cayenne SUV and most recently with the Panamera sedan – but the now Volkswagen-led will be returning to its roots over the next few years.

Although the Cayenne has been a huge money maker for Porsche, it really doesn’t fit in the automaker’s sports car theme. As such, Volkswagen’s board has decided to ax the Cayenne from Porsche’s product line after the next-generation of the SUV has run its course. An updated version of the Cayenne will bow for the 2011 model year, but no updates are expected thereafter.

Perhaps even more surprising, VW’s board has also voted to kill off the recently launched Panamera sedan after its initial run, according to Car. The Cayenne and Panamera are expected to finish their current life cycles with production ceasing sometime in 2016.

“VW Group has plenty of SUVs and saloons [sedans] — it doesn’t need Porsche to build them,” an inside source told Car.

Despite the thinning of the ranks, VW is said to be working on a new entry-level vehicle for Porsche. As previously reported, the new model would slot beneath the Porsche Boxster and share its underpinnings with a production version of the VW Bluesport concept.

Thats an early end to the Panamera.

thumper 09-02-2009 01:08 PM

i'm guessing that the cayenne will live on in the vw touraeg/audi q7, and the panamera will become the vw phateon.

... unless some long-lost porsche family surfaces and tries another hostile takeover

maxx 09-02-2009 01:29 PM

damn. the cayenne was a great alternative to the RR Sport.

jackmeister 09-02-2009 02:18 PM

hahaha
to add insult to injury.. first porsche tries to take over VW, then it got reverse-taken over, and now they're just butchering porsche.

Jackygor 09-02-2009 02:30 PM

its almost like they are trying to cripple porsche do they can never try to take over VW again lol

Harvey Specter 09-02-2009 02:49 PM

Thank god that two of the ugliest vehicles on the road today will be gone soon.

Jsunu 09-02-2009 03:26 PM

while the Cayenne is ugly as sin, it is still profitable! why shoot themselves in the foot damit

Mugen EvOlutioN 09-02-2009 03:30 PM

noooo who is gonna take the fastest SUV 's place if they take away the Cayenne

Gt-R R34 09-02-2009 04:18 PM

don't understand why are they killing the cash cow known as cayenne, even if i'm returning to my "roots" i don't see the point in ever killing a GOOD source of revenue.

asian_XL 09-02-2009 04:58 PM

I don't think that's a very smart business idea after spending all the money on development (espeically the upcoming Cayenne hybrid), and yeah, I don't think porsche has problem selling the cayenne, is that a rumour only?

X5 M

Harvey Specter 09-02-2009 05:07 PM

Or the X6 M.

One would think that people interested in the Cayenne would be pushed towards the Q7 or the Touareg considering they are almost the same car... Panamera would go towards the A8/Phaeton... but VW is smart in cutting the fat at Porsche. In the end they are a sports car company and within the VAG portfolio there are so many brands that fill the niche that the Cayenne and the Panamera fit... Panamera takes business from Audi, Bentley and VW and soon Lamborghini if they produce the 4 door saloon. Cayenne takes business from VW and Audi and in the end they are cannibalizing their own market with the addition of Porsche.

Porsche should go back to what they do best... producing Beetles with crazy handling and power! :)

Mugen EvOlutioN 09-02-2009 08:11 PM

is M X5 / M X6 even available? do they even have one? never seen on on the street

Thought SRT 8 was suppose to take its place if its gonna retire

:D

at the end of everything, the porsche family will own even more shares of the company

its very unlikely that they will cut the cayenne, its the biggest cash cow for porsche.

Harvey Specter 09-02-2009 08:57 PM

You'll see the M X5/6 soon.

Maybe Pagani or Bugatti will surprise us and build an SUV some day.

Like others have said, it's probably a stupid idea to cancel the Cayenne.
I'm sure VW would like to argue that it's taking away sales from the touraeg and Q7 but the fact of the matter is that neither VW or Audi have the same brand cache as Porsche does. No matter what Porsche has done recently, they still have 50+ years of brand equity that would be hard to erase. When you think of Porsche today versus Porsche 20 years ago, the key associations are probably still the same/very similar... and these associations are highly unlikely to be shared with Audi or with VW.

orange7 09-03-2009 06:29 AM

so who owns who? Porsche own VW? or the other way around?

What a stupid move on VWs part...they will just give the premium sports oriented SUV market to AMG, RR, and BMW (X5M and X6M).

This will go down as one of the dumbest automotive moves ever. The Porsche brand is rooted in performance, but let's face it, Cayenne consumers want the Porsche image with SUV usabability and comfort.

On paper that sounds right, but most people look at Porsche as a step up from Audi, regardless if their underpinnings are the same. VW is crazy to not leverage the quality and performance image of Porsche. Lamborghini does not have it (no racing heritage).

shenmecar 09-03-2009 07:51 AM

But the X6 is so ugly. Why the hell does it sell so well? Why are they even offering a "M" upgrade to it?!?!
