Winter or Snow tires for Vancouver?

Just wondering if people usually get WINTER tires or SNOW tires for the winters in Vancouver as I hear they are different; never realized.

The car is RWD 1987 325is with LSD, and I drive mostly in Richmond, Kits/Kerrisdale and down in Burnaby Heights (boundary/willingdon, so lots of hills).

Should I be looking at Snow tires or Winter tires?

Thanks!

Considering the worsening weather patterns, your RWD car and the fact that you're going into the hills on Burnaby, I would recommend getting some for your car. I live in Kerrisdale, and was quite glad that the minivan had Blizzak WS-50 tires on them during this past winter. That said, without 4WD I still got stuck due to the front getting high-centered on some snow banks.

Winter tires/snow tires are pretty interchangeable here in Vancouver, the difference isn't so great. Since you have a fairly light car treadwear would be minimal, and you have more choice.

If you want to prioritize winter driving capability (ice, snow conditions) I'd recommend the Blizzak WS-series (Bridgestone) and the Michelin X-Ice/Xi2. Never used Nokians so I can't recommend but people like them too. If you want to keep handling/sporty characteristics, get some performance winter tires like the Yokohama W.Drive, Michelin Pilot Alpin, Bridgestone Blizzak LM-series, Dunlop Wintersport 3D etc.

Thanks for the info. I think I'm gonna go with General Altimax Arctic, they are rated pretty decently and are quite a bit more affordable compared to the BF Goodrich or Michelin.

Talk to the sponsors here, they might be cheaper. I've gotten good price quotes on Bridgestone WS-60, and the General Altimax Arctic. Glad I could help!

Get a dedicated ice radial. You have been given a few good choices already. Don't let anyone talk you into an all season tire. I call them no seasons because they suck in everything.

The correct term is 3 season tires
