As a white Canadian living in Asia(Vietnam) I completly understand how an immigrant would feel coming to live in Canada, especially 10, 20, 30 years ago. It definately isnt easy to just jump into a society that doesnt speak your language and has a completely different way of life. So of course you look for what feels comfortable and safe. How can you really blame a person from Taiwan for primarily hanging out with Taiwanese people or eating at thier restaurants.
If you have a problem with how some people assimilate together then try inviting them out for drinks some time and make them comfortable in a more "Canadian" surrounding(hockey game for example).
If immigrants just came to Canada and did the "Canadian Thing," then we wouldnt have the opportunity to learn about so many different kinds of cultures through the arts, food, history, etc. etc. |
