Will 215/45 R17 fit as a replacement for 205/50 R17 Wheel? Hi, I have got a question regarding wheels fitting/requirement. According to tirerack, my mazda 3 will require 205/50 R17 will (for 17"). I was looking at this one ad and found out that 4 set of 215/45 R17 wheels are for sale. Will these wheels be okay for a replacement of 205/50 R17? Thanks in advance, Kaito |
Yes. Your stock size is a 25 inch tire. The new size is a 24.6 inch tire which is only off by 1.8%. Your speedo will read a little faster than your actual speed but everything should be ok. IIRC, the 3 has a 17x6.5 rim, so that tire will be fine. And I hope all the times you said wheel, you meant tire. |

If i want to upsize rims and get wider tires, I don't really need to worry about speedo being off? |

Say for example you had an S2000 and the stock tires are 205/55/16 front and 225/50/16 rear. Those are 24.9 inch tires (total diameter) If you went up to a 225/45/17 front and 255/40/17 rear, those are also 25 in tires. If you went up to a 225/40/18 front and 255/35/18 rear, those are also 25.1 and 25 in tires. So for those, you wouldn't have to recalibrate the speedo. If you were to go really wild and run a 305/30/19 tire, that is a 26.3 inch tire and then you might want to get it recalibrated. |

It works well =) How much does it usually cost to re-calibrate your tires? |

Re-calibrating your speedo, not sure. But don't sweat it too much because most manufacturers allow 2-4% error anyways. I used a GPS based datalogger to comfirm my car's actual speed. While the speedo said 100 km/k, I was doing 106 km/h. And my car is stock with stock sized tires. |
thanks again |

Ahhh, I see. Thank you =) One last question: If I were to purchase 225/45/R17 instead of 205/50/R17 for my Mazda 3 (OEM: 195/65/R15), will it be okay? Thanks |

A 225/45 will fit on a 6.5 inch rim. Just ask the neon guys who mount 225's onto their 6 inch SRT-4 wheels. |
I am not sure whether its 6.5" or 7". I bought these tires and the wheels together (the previous user had no issue with it). I was just wondering whether they would fit my car or not (as in, rubbing the fenders). The new wheels + tires spec: Wheels: 17", +45mm Offset, 5 x 114.3 Tire Size - 225/45/R17 W-Rated (already mounted on the wheels) OEM Spec (what I have installed now): Wheels: 15", 6.0 inches, + 52.5mm Offset, 5 x 114.3 Tire size - P195/65/R15 H-Rated Car: Mazda 3 2008 iSport Thanks, =) |
