my friend with a miata hangs it off the rear tow hook, but apparently cops aren't too fond of that one. maybe make a little pouch for it and snag that as the trunk closes like dealers do with the dealer plates, then have a piece of string to tie to the tow loop so it doesn't flap around. either that, or put that clear pouch on the inside of the rear window. It should be cooling off now so the top shouldn't be down much.

I use to hang mine off my license plate on my old car. I never had any issues, but a friend did it and was hassled about it at a road block.
Stuck behind a plate is better than not having it on at all, but it could still get you in trouble.
For those who dont put it on. AFAIK, If the cop runs your plate and finds that the registered owner of the vehicle still has his N its not hard to connect the dots.
I think some of them just turn a blind eye to it, assuming your not driving like an idiot.
As stated before, if someone were to hold a contest you would find somwhere to attatch it.
This might work. Attach a strong magnet to the inside of your bumper or trunk lid. Perhaps it will be strong enough to keep the N on the trunk lid or whatever. Use a magnet from a large speaker/subwoofer.

I guess the next best thing is to grab some washable Green and Black markers to draw on the N on the back and redraw it everyweek. Seriously hate to mess up the clearcoat. Swirl marks are a pain in the ass.

Does ICBC have any guidelines regarding cars with no place to put the sign?

Does ICBC have any guidelines regarding cars with no place to put the sign?[/QUOTE]
On the back of your DL it says ..."must display official new driver sign". That is what you must do when you drive. If you do not do this, you are breaking the restriction imposed on you as a new driver. If you can't figure how to do this, you are not supposed to drive. Simple.

Does ICBC have any guidelines regarding cars with no place to put the sign? | I can't even begin to imagine where to point out your gaps in logic.
The only thing that matters is if ICBC tells you to do something and you don't do it, the cops are going after you. Since ICBC says it is illegal, it doesn't matter if EVERYONE IN THE KNOWN WORLD can tell that he is a new driver, it doesn't make it any less illegal.
So tell me, why would it matter if people could or couldn't conclude that he is a new driver? We were talking about legality here, not about whether or not we can spot a new driver. n00b.

Just don't display the N sign and dispute the ticket, you will be back logging the court system and N sign doesn't even carry any points.

Ah yes it can if the Police choose to issue that ticket for failing to comply with restrictions. Your DL is not vailid unless you comply with ALL your restrictions.

Last time I checked molding tape sticks just fine to a freshly waxed car.....
or if you can get behind the bumper cover you could try using a few strong magnets on the back side, then place the magnetic "N" sign on the other.... it should stick fine just make sure you orientate the magnets to the right pole so they attract the other magnet ("N" sign) not repel it.......

Pop into a computer store and ask if they have any hard drive magnets (or old dead hard drives for that mater and pull them out yourself). Rare earth magnets are the strongest type around and might do the trick.
Am I in the minority here when I share the same feelings about not wanting to put tape on the paint or mount the sign in a way that would damage the clearcoat or paint?
This level of obsession might actually be a good thing. If he doesn't want the N sign putting even the slightest mark on the paint, he will probably drive in a way that is conducive to keeping his car in good condition: ie not driving like an idiot as many new drivers do.

^ on the flip side, if he can't follow something as simple as an N rule then what makes you think he can sort out the more complex ones?
another option is hit pick a part in Chilliwack and get a "beater" trunk/bumper skin to not worry about the paint on.

It is my experience that people who don't want their cars scratched, scuffed or dented tend to drive more defensively in order to preserve its condition.
Bottom line: He doesn't want his car wrecked so he likely will have no problem following other traffic laws.

Masking tape is your friend. Generally no residue and will not leave any mark after a good wash.

Bottom line: He doesn't want his car wrecked so he likely will have no problem following other traffic laws. | I follow all traffic code when ever I drive. I always come to a complete stop at all stop signs even if it's 3am in the morning. Never ran a red light nor do I speed, there simply isn't a reason to speed when the miata provides just as much enjoyment going the speed limit. Also I tend to park away from SUVs and other larger vehicles as well as properly maintained vehicles in parking lots in fear of having the car damaged.
In a way I am absolutely anal about the clearcoat on the car, I've recently spent close to $100 on MF towels, each one only touches the car's surface (single panel) once before they go into a dirty bin for washing. All towels that touch the ground are immediately thrown into the rubbish bin or become wheel/engine bay towels. The car receives regular washing, about once a week, sometimes twice a week and a new layer of wax every two weeks. In between washes I also use a duster to dust the car after every drive and also perform a wipe down with a Quick Detailer to remove any contaminents that are harmful to the paint.
I recently purchased a bottle of Optimum No Rinse Car wash so through out the winter months, I'll still be able to wash the car in the warmth of the garage.
I guess the only viable option now is to invest in some double sided foam tape and reapply it before every drive. Hopefully the tape will hold in the pouring rain we've been experiencing lately in Vancouver.
Cheers and thanks for all the helpful advice!
