my friend does toastmasters and he said it's good. it helps him with public speaking and being comfortable being in front of a group of strangers.

my childhood friend was one of the top guys for toastmasters been going there for years. It did him a lot of good for the self confidence. If you have a issue with public speaking take it you wont be dissapointed.

i take toastmasters for my work. we actually have our own company toastmasters group. I thought it was lame at first but after going to a few sessions it's quite beneficial as you go along. I guess its what you make of it, and if you particiapate in the events, even the "table topics" where you are given a random question and you have to talk on the spot for a minute. Once you make 10 speeches, you get your CTM, Compentent Toast Masters. The first speech is a quick introduction, no time limits or requirements. The following 9 give you things to work on, speech structure, body language, use of different tones, etc etc. As you keep going on, you learn to incorporate each new skill you've learned from your last speech.

I went to 1 meeting. Seems pretty good but the club at BCIT is at 7am so its way too early for me plus a pretty heavy workload.

I really like the table topics. I don't like how nerdy the BCIT guys are.

Exactly. I did it for a couple of years through Air Cadets mostly, and it was very good for me. Definitely worth a look, if it's not your cup of tea, you can always withdraw.

easiest way to to speak in front of people.

imagine they are in their underwear , and stare on top of their heads towards the exit at the back - not directly into their eyes.

I DON'T imagine them in their underwear....that's more terrifying than public speaking most of the time!

And here's another tip to build on tiger_handheld's second one: I usually pick three spots at the back of the room and I slowly, randomly look at each. Usually they're in a line-of-sight juuusssst by someone's ear, so they'll think, "Oh! He must be making eye contact with the chap behind me." Makes you look confident and is something to do, while not actually having to look anyone in the eye.

Not everyone has the balls to (yet), hence the need for Toastmasters and such.

I heard good things about it when I was at bcit. Its great if the career you take on requires a lot of public speaking or presenting (PR work, pitching to clients, etc.)

yeah it does help, especially because they give you constructive feedback at the end of your speech. they tell you what you should work on whether it is body language, hand gestures, vocal tonality etc etc.

yeah public speaking is really good skill to have. especially if you are in the information industry. the better you connect with your audience, the more business you will attract.

on the side note, yayyy i found a toastmaster's meet litereally like 5 minutes away from my house! woo hoo!! i'm gonna give them a call.
