Windows 7 Theme Packs, Guide & XP Mode!

Microsoft just released a bunch of new theme packs for Windows 7. I'm using the Ducati one right now. Most of them are pretty dope!

And here is a complete guide to Windows 7 courtesy of LifeHacker.

And if you run some ancient software or have oldschool hardware you need access to, like dot matrix printers (haha), don't forget to download and install XP Mode!

SkinnyPupp 10-22-2009 06:53 PM

Cool, I downloaded the Canada one

Preemo 10-22-2009 07:41 PM

Actually some of the other country theme packs are pretty damn nice.

SkinnyPupp 10-23-2009 02:05 AM

Man the resolution on these wallpapers is terrible

Ulic Qel-Droma 10-23-2009 08:40 AM

finished installing, just finished fucking around with it so it looks/feels as close to XP as possible without using any 3rd party or whatever mods.

fuck, i hate how they got rid of classic mode.

underscore 10-23-2009 10:44 AM

I make everything look like 98 or whatever. oldass grey taskbar :haha

anyone know how to make the quicklaunch suck less and not take so much space?

Dude replacing classic mode is the #1 feature of Win7. Use it for a while, you'll get used to it within a day, and then within a week you'll wonder why you ever stupidly wanted classic mode ;)

akira112 10-23-2009 07:18 PM

The Ducati theme is sweeet, can't wait for more to be released.

unlock your taskbar, then right click it a new thing should be on it, view small icons. this should fix it.

mine looks exactly like 98 now. oh you have to actually create a quicklaunch bar first. u can do little things like remove the name so it takes up less room.

well i've already gotten "used" to the start menu, but the task bar, i can never get used to this style. i never even got used to XP/Vista whatever style. I NEVER used anything other than classic mode :( i'm such a dinosaur.

now i have a question, what the fuck is the point of pinning things to your taskbar? all my stuff is in my quicklaunch, which is 1 click away anyways.

for those of you wanting your MSN to show up in your system tray instead of your task bar, just find the original EXE and run it on compatibility mode with vista.

SkinnyPupp 10-24-2009 05:11 AM

Quicklaunch and system tray are totally outdated :lol. By pinning programs, they will always be in that same spot. I have Firefox, EditPlus, some folders I go to often, Twitter, MSN, and Outlook pinned. That means that whether the programs are running or not, they will always be right there in that very same spot. It's so much better than the stupid system tray :lol

.Renn.Sport 10-24-2009 08:21 AM

the taskbar is a huge improvement over previous windows

i love the preview on the taskbar too

thank you! I hate having 2 spaces with the same junk for MSN. Now I just need to get rid of the "recent actions" or whatever in the start menu. they are never useful and get in the way of me arrowing over to my computer or whatever I need. I need to get the expansion on the system tray running horizontal again not vertical too.

thats...the exact same. more or less combined the quicklaunch and the taskbar. first thing I did tho was get rid of the stupid tiny icons and seperate my windows on the taskbar, if I could ditch that menu that pops up when I mouse over things on the taskbar too I'd be golden.

underscore 10-24-2009 01:15 PM

I switched back to one of the fancy themes for shits and giggles, and now I remember part of why I ditched it. Is there a way to get rid of the big ugly border around my MSN convos and make firefox less...gay? (so much baby blue is killing me)

By the baby blue, do you mean the baby blue around the firefox buttons like in the pic below?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...oon/ffblue.jpg

underscore 10-24-2009 02:37 PM

yeah that. might have to get a skin or somn to lose it. all I really want is a better/darker colour

tgill 10-24-2009 04:09 PM

the windows borders around msn windows is the messenger teams failure to fix their shit, and the blue firefox buttons is because the firefox team makes themes for each os.

here is the exact same default firefox theme with black buttons
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/13750

edit: nvm i think this is what your looking for https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8076

underscore 10-24-2009 06:18 PM

I am out of thanks but thank you!

SkinnyPupp 10-24-2009 08:20 PM

Live Messenger comes with a ton of skins. I am using one that is all black and has these cool pinstripes. I also set my borders to be all black, with a bit of opacity.

BTW if you really are a luddite who refuses to do things the better way, you can get back your old start button here.

underscore 10-24-2009 08:57 PM

looks like that just removes the start button?

I think I have 7 looking the way I want it now. oddly I think it runs better with the fancy stuff than when I have it looking like 98. or maybe that's just because I expected it to run like shit/noticeably slower. I think I'm gonna give this "pin to taskbar" business a shot too. Now if I could only make the taskbar a little thinner it'd be perfect (oh and get MSN to look like it does when I run in oldschool mode, with the shrink/resize/close buttons just added to the window and not requiring their own bar) actually now that I think about it the title bar of any window is completely useless.

edit: like this http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...Untitled-2.png

slightly offtopic but is there any way to remove Vista from my other partition while leaving everything else alone?

You can make the taskbar thinner, just flick on small icons. I'll check my laptop for where it is in a bit.

underscore 10-24-2009 09:22 PM

I did, I still want it a touch thinner lol. I like to maximize the usable area on my laptop.

SkinnyPupp 10-24-2009 09:28 PM

The link I sent gives you the old school Start button. I even used it in Vista, even though it hasn't changed since Windows 95 :lol

I like the Win7 version best. I can pin the 3 or 4 programs I want there, and everything I use most is automatically there. And if I ever need to run something else, I just type it in. Awesome!

underscore 10-24-2009 09:34 PM

I LOVE that search there. every search before Vista was essentially useless, this ones the king shit of searches.
