His company also bought the Fast Ferries from the BC Gov at 1/10th of the cost and sold it back out for a huge profit. As taxpayers, I suppose we helped him out.

No, much more.
Marine engines must be overhauled every several years as the saline water used in cooling corrodes quickly. As well you have to have staff maintaining it, and probably a berth to park it. Let's not think about how much diesel that thing needs to move!

I google'd this and found a post on yachtforums.com
http://www.yachtforums.com/forums/te...ing-costs.html

One member said that the annual maintenance costs are 10% of the initial purchase price. Assuming it cost $50M, he's burning through $5M/year!

Here's more figures from same thread/forum:

Here are some details out of my crew experience: 100 feet 4 Crew 1 Year

Captain 72000
Engineer: 60000
Deckhand: 24000
Stew : 24000
Chef : maybe 6 month in Season 20000
Total Crew costs without travelling and crew agency costs around
200,000 Euro a year

They're also going to use them as tug boats to park the massive yacht.

Are you at the Shipyard or Dry Dock? I'm at the Spit. :p

Last summer, I had the privillage of going onto Jim Pattison's boat. Of course JP wasn't there, but his staff of 6 was. Each year, JP spends over $2M to run the boat. And every year, they have to repaint everything, inside and out. New carpets. Only down side was the master bedroom still had some shitty old ass CRT tv.

And his boat has a crane and 2 jet ski's on the top floor.

I think Paul Allen had his boat docked beside Canada place a few years ago. That boat had a helicopter landing pad, and an area to drive another boat into.

I think helicopters cost $100,000-$500,000 each

Built in 2008, Motor Yacht A caught the attention of the yacht industry for its unusual design by Philippe Starck. The white boat with a three-story tower is reminiscent of a submarine, with a pointy, arrowhead-like bow. It has a helipad, two swimming pools and a bed that rotates on a turntable. The yacht is said to be named after Melnichenko's wife, Aleksandra, but it has also been reported that Melnichenko chose the name in order to ensure it is always first on alphabetical lists of top boats.

or this one

Eclipse was recently launched and is now the longest in the world. Despite all the speculation, little can be confirmed about the yacht. Even a definite length has not been pinned down with certainty. Reports have put the cost at anywhere from $300 million to $700 million. Russian billionaire Abramovich will take possession once it is finished, likely in early 2010.

I've see his boat docked outside from the office window at Seaspan getting maintenance a few times. Interesting place to work at, the Washington Marine Group. I use the gym there sometimes after work and I've seen Pat Quinn there a few times working out.
